Kell Brook Predicts Thriller, Knockdowns By Him & Errol Spence
By Keith Idec
Kell Brook believes he and Errol Spence Jr. can deliver a classic Saturday night.
The IBF welterweight champion expects to hurt Spence, yet also knows the powerful southpaw is more than capable of hurting him.
Brook acknowledged during a press conference Thursday in Sheffield, England, that he wouldn’t be surprised if both boxers went down during what he has predicted will be “a war” at Bramall Lane in Sheffield.
“He’s a very good fighter, Errol Spence, and I think our styles are gonna jell,” Brook said. “And I think there’s gonna be a lot of drama in this fight, a lot of drama. So we both may be at the canvas, but that’s just gonna be great for y’all guys to watch. This fight’s just gonna be a thriller, fireworks from round one. He’s not gonna take a backwards step and I’m not. So the fans are in for a fantastic night.”
Unlike Brook, Spence didn’t concede that they both might taste the canvas in this 12-round bout. He agreed, though, that they’ll provide plenty of drama in their IBF-mandated welterweight title fight.
“Definitely. There will be drama,” Spence said. “Kell Brook, he’s a guy who can fight. He has power and he has size, and I have the same, too. And I’m looking to come forward. And he said he’s not looking to take a backward step, and I’m not taking a backward step. So of course there’s gonna be drama.”
The 27-year-old Spence (21-0, 18 KOs), a 2012 Olympian from DeSoto, Texas, is slightly more than a 2-1 favorite to take Brook’s 147-pound championship. The 31-year-old Brook (36-1, 25 KOs) is motivated by being the underdog, despite that the fight will take place at a soccer stadium in his hometown (Showtime: 5:15 p.m. ET/2:15 p.m. PT; Sky Sports Box Office: 6 p.m. BST; £16.95 in HD).
“I want it with all my heart,” Brook said. “I’ve been coming down here [to Bramall Lane] since I was 7. My Uncle Johnny told me I’d defend me world title here one day. You know, he said that, ‘You will box and you will defend your world title.’ So it’s a dream come true for me, for the city. I’ve just looked out and I’ve never seen the pitch like that before, all ready for Saturday night. And like I said, I wanna go out there and put on a great show for everybody.”
