I'm gonna be honest myself.... as a 39 year old black man, I couldn't name a Freddy Jackson song myself either.

Growing up, my parents played 80s black gospel so I know names like Larnell Harris, or super mainstream cats like Peabo Bryson etc.

Cookouts definitely didn't have spades often(dominoes sometimes), or beer coolers.

It is what it is.

I’ll give you a pass OP.

He does sound similar to Luther in that song but as long as you know the song that’s enough.

Yea i give him a pass too because i asked my pops the same question when i was younger and he corrected me and im 42 so it wasnt my era. Also there was tons of good music back then it just depended on what type of time your parents were on. By the time i was born my parents were’nt getting high anymore so most of those fiend songs from Snowfall i didnt hear in my household. Mostly gospel from my mom and my pops had the teddy P, freddie jackson, barry white, and surface in rotation.

I had a friend who parents listened to a lot of rock and that blew my mind

It's always weird when people who listen to hip hop don't know the old artists. You would think hip hop fans would be the most knowledgeable when it comes to music
