fukk it...let's examine.

If you turn (1+2) into (x)

You get 6÷2(x)...which = 3(x) = 9.:ohhh::ehh:

However...if we phrase it as:

6
---------
2(1+2)

You get:

6
---------
2(3)

Which when I look quickly appears to be 1.

But I guess it's 9:yeshrug:

There are implicit parentheses around numerator and denominator terms so 6÷2(1+2) is not the same as

___6____
2(1+2)

The above fraction would be written as 6÷[2(1+2)], which is why in your case, you would get 1.

you telling me 6 / 2 is fukking 2? Y'all nikkas are embarrassing
Uhhhhh not sure where I said that?

All I did between those steps is simplify the 1+2 into 3?

6/2=3. 3x3 is 9.

If you simplify the denominator first then 2×3=6. 6/6=1.

Honestly if I were still in college I'd punch it into the Ti-84 and just go with whatever answer it gave me.

Electrical engineer not electrician as evinced by my understanding of this simple math problem that has you stumped.
:deadmanny: aiyo my nikka thinks electircal engineers wire people's cribs.
I love y'all nikkas

Reminds me when you having a deep ass argument with you mans and someone out the blue say something that everyone falls quiet:dahell::lupe:

Huh? You solve what's in parenthesis first true, but the parenthesis disappear after you solve what's in them.
Nope then there's a 3 inside which is multiplied by 2 then divided by 6.

At least imo...:manny:

When you have both multiplication and division, you go left to right. Meaning you solve what's in the parenthesis, move left to divide, then multiply.

If it were 6/(2(1+2)) it would be 1, but since multiplication and division is done together it's really;

6 / 2 x (1+3)
so
6 / 2 x 3
Left to right

Answer is 9, but 1 is not wrong. It really depends on the teacher and course.

Not gonna fight too hard on this but solving the parenthesis doesn't turn it into 6 ÷ 2 × 3
It's still 6 ÷ 2(3)

Still my opinion

Yes it does. Anything next to a parenthesis is always implied multiplication, which is why you're multiplying the 2 times the 3 in the parenthesis. You're just doing it in the incorrect order, as you should divide first because it's at the left. Not that your opinion isn't valuable, but these are the rules of the order of operations (PEMDAS). That's what taught, but how it's been interpreted seems to be something else.

  1. Parentheses (simplify inside 'em)
  2. Exponents
  3. Multiplication and Division (from left to right)
  4. Addition and Subtraction (from left to right)
