But in actuality his father had a major influence in his life. According to an Essence interview, Will Smith explained what his father was like. “Dad was tough but not tyrannical,” Smith told Essence. “He kept me in line. He’d get this look that said, ‘One more step, Will, and it’ll get ugly.’ He was an independent businessman-he set up refrigeration in supermarkets-and he always provided for us. I don't t think anyone thought that the show was based off of Will's real life. It's a show and it's called acting.

It's funny how we never hear about his real dad or his first son like ever. Does he even acknowledge ol Trey? Breh gotta be about 24 now

Breh you must be real young, everyone knows about Trey. Trey was the main focus in the "Just the Two of Us" video, which was about him. This was a very popular video in the late 90s and consistently on TRL's video countdown.

Wow! I've never seen a pic of his parents before. Nice looking family. Jada looks pretty here too.

Will did his think in that scene. One of the most memorable episodes. I also like when he took the bullet for Carlton.

He CHOSE to abandon you. Unless she changed your name and moved to a new state or country and he couldn't find you after an extensive search.

Its funny how some kids take it out on or blame the parent who chose to stay.

By all accounts, Will Smith's real dad was a hardworking businessman who raised his family in a nice Philly neighborhood. Yet so many people probably thought he was a deadbeat based on that Fresh Prince episode and how good Will's acting was in that scene
