Without knowing the other details of the deal we don't know if this is a win or an L...

Getting promo and distribution along with rights and residuals without a big payment to recoup could be better than other money up front deals

:yeshrug:
This. nikkas keep listening to the $2500 or $5000 “advance” like an advance is the only part of the deal. nikkas used to shyt on rappers for signing $500k advances and not recouping even 3, 4, albums in.
sad. he could have worked a month , hell even a week or 2 at some jobs and gained that. why don't these dudes like him or diddy do these types of deals exploiting nonblack artists instead
Because he obviously didn’t sign the deal just for the advance. He signed the deal because of exactly where he’s at now. The Kodak cosign and features allowed him to build a name/buzz for himself and likely made labels with actual money interested. Ain’t no amount of shifts at Pizza Hut getting you that kind of exposure.

Hearing Jackboy explain that deal. That doesn’t sound like a bad deal and imo most ppl in Jackboy position would be stupid to turn that down. A one album shop deal where you ride the coattails of one of the biggest rappers?

The reason people had shytty deals back in the day is because they were getting large 6 figure advances but minimal points (like less than $0.20) per album. And they had to pay those advances plus their album budget back on their share of points. So even if they sold a million copies their share was only netting $.20 per copy which is only $200k. So they would have to pay that $500k advance + all the other money spent on the their album (which of course the label would inflate) back with that $200k. That’s why they would always be in the red despite being platinum. Then yeah the label would give them another $500k advance for the 2nd album but that would only inflate the debt even more. And they’d be stuck in these long 5-10 album deals of this cycle. That’s what made those deals so bad. A “$5k” or even “$2.5k” deal in and of itself doesn’t make a deal a bad deal and in fact could be the exact opposite.

Lastly when a lot of these rappers brag about signing a $5 million deal or $10 million dollar deal or whatever super bloated number. That ain’t what’s going on their pocket or the advance. Much of that number is the total value of the deal which includes the advance, studio budget, marketing budget and usually split across multiple albums. So $10 million, 4 album deal is really just a $2.5 million deal per album for 4 albums. All of which has to be recouped before the artist starts getting their share of the splits.

Jackboy eating

He never went to a major so wasn’t locked In to a 5 albumn deal. Kodak got locked up and he went on his grind

Fivio coulda done the same but he wanted the major label push and a check.
You explained nothing about how he actually got 1 mil liquid.

Y'all just be believing these rappers and that's the real problem.
