I keep seeing the whole "nike marketing machine" helping Jordan's legacy argument and those people have it backwards

What the fukk was Nike before the Air Jordan? They never cracked a billion in sales before Jordan was signed. They never signed athletes from the big 3 sports before Jordan.

So basically one signing took them from early under-armour status (innovative but not cool at all) to a worldwide cultural institution.

You do know that the "Like Mike" shyt started AFTER Bo Jackson got injured right? They were putting money behind Jordan but Bo was supposed to be MJ and then he got injured so all of their focus went to Jordan

Nike would not be in the financial position by 87 or 88 to sign an athlete like Bo Jackson or to fund his marketing campaign without having Jordan become a runaway success first. I believe the last high profile signing they had before MJ was John McEnroe(sp?) the tennis player that used to throw tantrums

Y'all don't know it but I am 36 years old and remember that Bo was EVERYWHERE and this was before Nike got behind Jordan like they did. They always had money behind Jordan but it wasn't until Bo got injured that they truly put EVERYTHING on Jordan. Bo Jackson was that dude because they could really market him year round with him being a baseball and football player.

Also as far as Like Mike goes it was a Gatorade commercial but you must be crazy if you don't think Nike and Pepsi got together and brainstormed before that shyt came out. Look at the commercials he had Nike shyt all through those commercials, and then look up old commercials when he was with McDonalds, Ball Park etc., he never had on Nike shyt.

Y'all may not think it's true but it was Just Do It, then Bo Knows Bo and then the Jordan campaign that just flew. Nike had been trying forever to find that one person and they had it in Jordan but they tried to roll with Bo Jackson
