I wonder if warner bros. let him do it, if he said I'm gonna hire an mostly asian cast and set it in real time Japan with both english subtitles... You'd think warner would let him do it then??? 
There is a rumor he could also be directing the project, as well as producing. No one knows. He has a movie scheduled for 2017. It could be Akira. I think it would be dope if he did Akira. He has enough clout to get the 200 million dollar budget the movie needs and be able to deliver the spectacular visual effects the movie needs.
Unfortunately this sounds too good to be true, so he's probably just producing it. Then again, he may be in love with the source material and view the project as the perfect challenge for him.

Hell yes, they would. If Nolan does it, they will let him cast whoever the fukk he wants. You forget they greenlit Inception, a 200 million dollar movie that had no IP behind it, and they themselves didn't fully understand the movie. They will do whatever the fukk he wants to do with Akira if he directs it.
Nolan, for all the hate he gets for his smart-dumb writing, is one of the last real - true to the art-directors in the mainstream imo. he would do this just to see if he could pull it off artistically.
They only made inception because he agreed to make tdkr though.

I know. So imagine what they would be willing to give him to direct Akira? Remember WARNERS has wanted to make this movie for years. They paid high 7 figures for the property and have spent at least 10 million or more on all the development of the property. They want to make this movie badly. They will give Nolan free reign to make this movie however he wants. The dialogue could be in Japanese and they would do it.
Nolan directing a property of this caliber guarantees at least 700 million worldwide box office. Warners would be all in for him ti direct this. And let's be serious, Nolan would only direct this if he could do it his way.
