It's rote, and nonsensical when you consider we all gather around to watch oiled up guys settle differences.
The worst part is that the least talented of the bunch got the most TV time.

At first they were literally booking it as if they were in competition. Like nitro vs raw.
Some people who were stale were refreshed with new gimmicks. Traitors jumping ship to the other brand. fighting for free agents. New matches being introduced such as elimination chamber or Raw roulette . Midcard and heavyweight titles and tag belts being meaningful.
Now on raw and smackdown people just pop up whenever they want on either show
