Following Jerry Lawler's medical emergency on Monday's WWE RAW, he'll obviously be off WWE television for the foreseeable future. There has been a lot of speculation this week as to who will replace Lawler on commentary.

Jim Ross is in Boston for tonight's WWE Night of Champions pay-per-view, a sign he could be returning to the announcer's booth.

As of Sunday morning, F4Wonline.com is reporting that former WWE Champion John Bradshaw Layfield had been contacted by WWE and they reached an agreement for him to work commentary for Night of Champions and tomorrow's RAW.

Dave Meltzer says this could be more than a 2-shot deal for JBL, who is off to Africa later this month to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro as part of his Seven Summits mountain climbing adventure.

You know what else is bad for business? Never trying to create new stars/draws and relying on the same guy + returning acts until the business collapses.

They gave this guy multiple programs against Cena, had him beat up the Rock, a year long title run, multiple title runs... you can't "try to create" any more than they've done with Punk.

He can beat Cena tomorrow and Rock in January, a couple "wins" is not what's missing from him drawing any money, he just doesn't have it.

meltzer notes

WWE Night of Champions takes place at 7:30 p.m. Sunday in Boston at the T.D. Garden
*C.M. Punk vs. John Cena for WWE title - Should be a good match. No predictions here. If it's me, Punk goes over just because I think he should be champion at the Rumble and it makes more sense for Cena to win it at Mania. But if they think that's what people think, they'll reverse it. Will be interesting since even though Cena is from Boston, they usually boo him there. Punk will be with Paul Heyman which will make a small percentage cheer him more, but probably not the majority.

*Sheamus vs. Alberto Del Rio for World title - Feels like we've seen this one forever. Unlike Punk, because he's got the big money match upcoming, it seems time for Sheamus to lose, particularly since they've done this match so many times. There was a TV tease of the idea that Ziggler would cash it in and later defend against Orton, since Orton vs. Ziggler is supposed to take place after Sheamus vs. Del Rio. Sheamus vs. Del Rio is always solid to good, but I've never seen it great.

*Randy Orton vs. Dolph Ziggler - If these two are on, they have the potential to have the best match on the show. Depending on what the show-long storyline is, could go either way. Orton is going to stick around TV, so his losing and leaving isn't the case, unless they have a change of plans. Ziggler has lost a lot, but that's what they often do to someone who is about to get the title.

*Kofi Kingston & R-Truth vs. Kane & Daniel Bryan for tag titles - Tag titles mean nothing on Kingston & R-Truth. With Kane & Bryan, belts are elevated, can due the dissension gimmick and pass them to Mysterio & Sin Cara, who should have them.

*The Miz vs. Rey Mysterio vs. Cody Rhodes vs. Sin Cara for the IC title - The pressure is on Sin Cara here for a number of reasons. First is that heavily edited match on Smackdown he's taking the blame for. Also, the brief Sin Cara vs. Mysterio spots have to be spectacular. Four-ways are hard to work. This could go either way.

*Antonio Cesaro defends the U.S. title against the winner of a Battle Royal (which takes place at 7:30 p.m. on You Tube)

*Layla vs.. Kaitlyn for the Divas title - Keep this one short please.
Feels going in like a typical WWE show. Main event does match up the two biggest stars in the company as far as the full-timers go, and the promos building were strong. So in that sense it should be above average in numbers, but don't get the impression much above usual and even Cena vs. Punk has been done a lot and doesn't feel special. Looking at the lineup, it's the main event carrying things because Sheamus vs. Del Rio isn't anything special and Orton vs. Ziggler was already done multiple times on television.

--John Layfield and Michael Cole are scheduled to announce the show tonight. I don't know if Josh Matthews will be with them or not. Layfield as best we can tell is only in for this week because he's leaving on Thursday to attempt to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa this coming weekend. But Layfield is scheduled for Raw in Bridgeport to announce the show.

--There were a lot of tickets left for tonight's show, including as of this morning, four tickets available in the front row. (thanks to Emerson Witner)

--Jim Ross is in Boston for non-announcing related business. As of mid-afternoon, he was not scheduled to announce on the show, but it wouldn't surprise me a bit for that to change and him do one match or two.

--Jerry Lawler is expected to be returning home in a few days which is good news.

Multiple? This is the second. You make it sound like he's been feuding with Cena forever before that. Before his feud with Cena and the pipebomb promo last year he was jobbing to all the faces (Taker, Show, Rey, Orton etc) while staying consistently over enough to make his ascension to upper mid card/main eventer much more easier.

And as for "you can't try to create" any more ... have you seen Orton or Cena's pushes for the last decade? :childplease:

You can't create new stars if you keep telling the audience the current top guy is always gonna be your priority and that people from the previous era is much better, no matter how many titles you slap on them. (refer to Swagger for his WHC win, Del Rio for his RR, MITB and WWE title wins, etc)

But you already knew all this though ... but in case you really lost, breh ... I'm just tryna getchu' to see the large picture. :jawalrus:

So JBL is back tonight and Ross is town? That's not bad..not bad at all. JBL was fukkING HORRIBLE as a competitor but his commentary got kind of reasonable at the end.
