Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference will take place June 4–8 at the McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, California. Though the conference is aimed at developers, consumers and media tune into the keynote speech to see what Apple has planned for the rest of the year.
And while Apple isn't expected to unveil new iPhone hardware, it will show off plenty of software and maybe even some new devices. Here’s everything that Apple is expected to show off at this years WWDC.
iOS 12
It goes without saying that Apple will show off the next version of iOS at WWDC. It’s hard to believe, but this will be the twelfth iteration of iOS. What will iOS 12 off feature-wise? It’s important to note that it might not be as big an update as Apple originally planned. According to reports, Apple has decided to delay some of the major features intended to be in iOS 12 to instead launch with iOS 13 next year. Instead, iOS 12 will focus on stability and security improvements.
That being said, there are some new features. Without a doubt, the biggest new feature of iOS 12 will be cross-platform app compatibility between iOS and Mac devices. Yeah, this is HUGE. Apple is rumored to be releasing tools that allow developers to develop apps that work with both touchscreens and mice. These cross-platform apps could then be installed on iOS devices and Macs.
Other features will include new Animoji, better Parental Controls, better Siri/Photos Integration, and some minor interface tweaks.
macOS 10.14
Likewise, mac os 10.14 is also expected to focus heavily on security and stability. The only new reported feature will be the aforementioned cross-platform app compatibility between iOS and Mac devices. This change will be one of the most monumental in Apple’s history, potentially greatly expanding the number of Mac apps that are available. Apple is also rumored to be bringing some of its in-house app, like Home, to the Mac in this new cross-platform ecosystem. Let’s hope they bring the News app over as well.
watchOS 5 and tvOS 12
While there are no rumors as to what Apple’s Apple Watch OS and Apple TV OS features will be gaining, Apple is sure to show off the bests of both OSes at WWDC. Here’s hoping Apple finally brings picture-in-picture to the Apple TV.
iPhone SE 2
While we expect the new iPhone X and iPhone 8 replacements to be unveiled in September, it’s possible Apple could introduce one new iPhone at WWDC. This would be the second generation of the iPhone SE, the popular 4in iPhone. It’s rumored to include the new A11 Bionic chip as well as a notable omission: that of the headphone jack. Yep, Apple is serious about killing the 3.2mm jack.
New MacBook Pros
Though WWDC is primarily a software conference, Apple could introduce new MacBook Pros. don't expect any major design changes, however. Instead, expect spec bumps and little else.
AirPower
The AirPower is Apple’s wireless charging mat that can charge up to three Apple devices at a time (like your iPhone X, Apple Watch, and AirPods). The accessory was announced in September 2017 with only a “2018” release date mentioned. It hasn’t shown up yet, so a final reveal could be scheduled for this year’s WWDC.
