Just cause YOU didn't know people from other promotions doesn't mean tons of other fans didn't. Obviously WCW wasn't as big as WWF but they were still on national TV. Plus at the time wrestling mags were a huge deal. Flair coming in was treated as a huge deal. Hell even the Steiners coming in was a huge deal. Lugr ehyped up as part of the WBF a year before Wrestlemania and in the WWF magazines before his debut.

The problem was WWF dropping the ball as their creative team was garbage at the time and too worried about not putting over the big names from other companies.
