Unfortunately, if you don't have the cash to drop on a place, you are going to have very limited choices.

Efficiency Apartments, Boarding Houses (are they still a thing?).

Also Shotgun Houses have that layout where you are walking through rooms to get to the bathroom and kitchen

this, my boys lived in apt like this in ridgewood. Had to go through 2 “bedrooms” to get to the kitchen / bathroom.

I still made fun of them for basically sleeping in hallways

I lived in one back in the day , but it was just me. So I had no problems
