The wife and I have been lifting weights together for a month or two. I've been going for years, but she's just getting back to the gym (she's always been an off-and-on runner, but never really into weights).
I think the plan is to get her comfortable and with a good understanding of how to mix up lifts ... then we can go together and workout separately (or somewhat separately).
I'm good with being there to spot her, encourage her or whatever - but, when we do the same routine, I'm switching weights between EVERY SET of every squat/dead/bench. So, for a deadlift, I'm basically switching between 315 and 85. Not that fun.
But, it's worth it if it gets her back into the gym. I think it has more mental benefits than physical.
