I don't see the problem honestly. Especially seeing how he's in most of his films, they are from his perspective more often than not...maybe he doesn't be around black folk like that?

I mean I understand the need for representation, but there's a middle ground...at some point I gotta ask why should we even care if he puts us in one of his movies? Why should we care about a lot of shyt that we pin point about what "others" are doing, or aren't "giving". It gets to the point that you start asking which is worse, us not being "thrown a bone" or us wanting one anyway.

:yeshrug:

Now if he goes and writes a movie with a black lead nobody is going to rejoice, they'll say he's pandering, shyt just ends up feeling like a waste of a thought process.

Couldn't agree more with this.

Make movies set in urban America and deliberately not show any black or brown people ANYWHERE, brehs

I wonder where Lena Dunham got that from....

I get your point but they are pointing at that most of his films are based in New York. White people haven't been over 50% of the city's population since dude has been writing yet there's never a Black, Latino, or Asian character in it.

The first time he had a prominent black actor in a movie, Hazelle Goodman, she played a hooker:

But Chiwetel Ejiofor and Daniel Sunjata in "Melinda and Melinda" played the type of brothas everyone on the coli pretends to be

But, whether we like it or not, he writes about the types of people he hangs out with on the Upper East Side and that's not exactly the most diverse neighborhood in Manhattan. This is one of the many reasons why it's important for us to support the films made by black filmmakers that might not get as much promotion as they deserve. At any rate, if you're a movie fan you should at least see "Annie Hall" "Manhattan" "Crimes and Misdemeanors" and "Hannah and Her Sisters" because they make "Midnight in Paris" look like child's play(and I'm a big fan of that movie).

People have been pointing out the lack of black faces in Woody Allen movies for years.

The director, who's far from universally beloved as a person, but is beyond critically respected as a filmmaker, answered the question in a recent interview with the New York Observer ... sort of.

Here's the quote from what the reporter described as a "horrified" Allen when he was asked about not casting black actors in his movies:

"Not unless I write a story that requires it. You don’t hire people based on race. You hire people based on who is correct for the part. The implication is that I’m deliberately not hiring black actors, which is stupid. I cast only what’s right for the part. Race, friendship means nothing to me except who is right for the part."

Uh, that still doesn't really explain why after making movies for five decades a meaningful role in one of Allen's films has never been "right" for a black actor, but OK.

Is this just Allen being honest in saying he doesn't think about black roles at all when he's writing? Is this a problem?

The profile goes on to report that Allen does what most white people when they're confronted with an accusation of racism: list their black friends, which in Allen's case apparently includes Chris Rock and Spike Lee.

It's worth a read if you have a few minutes.

Probably not his target audience and he's not black so whatever. As a black male I've never seen any of his movies in my life nor have I ever wanted to.

So what? Again...these movies come from his mind, being a wealthy hollywood jew he's probably very isolated from people in general, let alone black folks. If he were to follow the "write what you know" format to any degree I would see why his universe doesn't seem that diverse.

Exactly.

He's got some good films but I hate his dialogue out of other people's mouths...it just sounds too much like HIM, he might as well get his fugly ass in the picture

who the hell is checking for this clown's movies anyway? :dahell:

dude's an awkward weirdo.

His last movie made something like 95 mil on a budget of 18 mil and won a bunch of awards. Never saw it, heard Cate Blanchett's really good in it.

Not that I really cared about this before reading this thread, but this quote right here is offensive:

"Not unless I write a story that requires it. You don’t hire people based on race. You hire people based on who is correct for the part."

So only white folks are 'correct for the part'? :dahell:

I hope this CaC never has a black character in his film, cuz he's pretty much told us that he'd only be there BECAUSE he's black which means s/he'll likely be playing some stereotypical role or the characters arc will be about their blackness. :snoop:

Seeing the way Woody Allen, portrays anyone who is not wealthy, elite, upper east siders, I would not want to see his take on blacks, mexicans, any other race, I'm sure it would be embarrassingly offensive, just look at the dude Bobby Canavle playing 'blue collar' in that latest godawful uneven train wreck, 'Blue Jasmine'. Woody Allen has or had talent, and has made some good movies, that while i don't really enjoy, I respect within reason. But fukk Woody Allen.

I've never seen one woody allen movie

The movie with Rachel McAdams? That's his movie ? If so that's the ONLY Woody Allen movie I've EVER seen. Anyway, :pacspit: at him.

Probably not his target audience and he's not black so whatever. As a black male I've never seen any of his movies in my life nor have I ever wanted to.

I've never watched a movie by him

You guys are actually missing out, especially if you like character driven movies. Emotions aside, if you're interested in great writing, directing, acting and cinematography then don't cheat yourself.

Also, like I said, in "Melinda and Melinda" Chiwetel Ejiofor plays a character who fits right in that world. In fact, his character could've been played by anyone white, latin, asian, etc. so Woody Allen actually contradicted himself in this interview.
