with us (Rican) only the fathers last name carries on

so it would be Johnson Tremblay

either way thats for the kids to decide

Tell me a woman has to give up more than a man when women aren't capable of ripping kids away for their fathers with ease via divorce courts and taking half a man's fortune through the same vehicle.

Thats a whole other topic, friend. Just because one thing in society favours women doesnt mean we have to disregard all other "issues"(im not gonna call dis topic an issure) regarding gender relations.

Obviously thats a residue of the times women were nothing but a man's possession.

What do you guys think about that? Personally I would understand if my wife wouldn't necessarily want to lose her last name in favour of mine, but then from a practical point of view I don't see how we could do otherwise.

If we give our kids both our names, say Jonhson and Brown, our kids are gonna be Johnson-Browns'

Then what about their kids? In 5 generations well have 10 names long last names and shyt

Or we could each give our last names to our kids, some Johnson some Brown, but thats:patrice:

What do the brehs and brehettes think on the matter?

There's nothing wrong with hyphenated last names in my opinion. I guess American culture has different views on this from what i'm seeing here.

In Islam for example, women are encouraged to keep their maiden last names in marriage to the men. That's how it is for my family. My mom kept her last name but i still take my dad's last name as well as the first part of the name of his dad.

Loll u guys got me kinda fukked up. Im not makin this to be a big issues or fightin for the right for women to keep their name or some shyt.

Im jus sayin, is it that wrong? Like what was the purpose of women giving up their name in the first place? And does that purpose allings itself with our values in society today and womens growing place in it?

Im not mad at women tryna carry their family heritage forward.

Nope.
I wanted to keep my maiden name but as years have passed I realize it'll be useless re: things we plan to do in the future. It just speaks to more of a unit mentality. I'm okay with that.
