The attractive scale is so subjective. Reasoning for why this happens in the OP: I think some women unknowingly add in other qualities that don't have anything to do with physical appearances. Like if she's a little overweight but knows how to put on make up or dress and has a graduate degree, well paying job etc, they may rate themselves higher. That's how we see men too.
