I remember this having a great atmosphere, great cast, but falling apart on the writing side.

Rick Baker killed it with the makeup and IIRC, mentioned the film was going to prioritize practical effects more, especially in the transformation scene, before the studios decided to go overboard with the shoddy CGI work. Similar also happened with ‘The Thing’ prequel in 2011.

Me and my lady joke about this every once in a while. This was the first movie we saw together and it ended up being a complete 180 from what I thought it was gonna be and underwhelming. I’m still embarrassed I recommended we see this

The director coming in at the last minute doomed this from the get-go. All of the pre-production material had been done under a different director and it makes sense as to why things feel off upon a rewatch.
