Mayweather: Khan Must Beat Danny Garcia To Get a Shot

Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s explanation Thursday for why he didn’t pick Amir Khan as his Sept. 12 opponent was similar to the rationale of countless critics that didn’t want Mayweather-Khan to happen.
“Amir Khan has to get past Danny Garcia first,” Mayweather told Showtime’s Brian Custer in an interview that followed the Mayweather-Andre Berto press conference in Los Angeles.
“Once Amir Khan can get past Danny Garcia, then … you know, the fight would’ve happened. But that’s not my focus. My focus is Andre Berto, a guy I can’t overlook, a former two-time world champion. He’s dedicated to the sport, just like myself, and he’s going to push me.”
Garcia (31-0, 18 KOs) knocked out Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) in the fourth round of their July 2012 junior welterweight title fight in Las Vegas. The 28-year-old Khan has won five consecutive fights since Garcia stopped him and would’ve been a more marketable opponent than Berto, but the polarizing British star has drawn criticism over the years for failing to pursue rematches with Philadelphia’s Garcia and Colombia’s Breidis Prescott (28-7, 21 KOs), who knocked out Khan in the first round of their September 2008 bout in Manchester, England.

Mayweather on Thurman: Good Fight For Him is Spence

While a press conference held Thursday afternoon in Los Angeles to formally announce his September 12 showdown with Andre Berto, there seemed to be greater concern over the fighters Floyd Mayweather isn’t facing.
Amir Khan and Shawn Porter were among the welterweights who were snubbed for the September 12 date at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mayweather insists that the event will be the last fight of his illustrious career, leaving fans to hope that a stronger opponent would have been selected.
His most ardent supporters will find ways to list reasons as to why neither of the aforementioned deserve such an opportunity at this time. It’s a bit tougher to pick apart the buildup for Keith Thurman, however—unless of course your only argument is that the pound-for-pound and box office king has earned the right to choose as he pleases after beating Manny Pacquiao in the most celebrated event in boxing history.
The unbeaten welterweight titlist from Clearwater, Florida has been tabbed by many as one of the can’t miss stars of the future and has repeatedly called out Mayweather whenever the subject arises.
When the future Hall of Famer was pressed on the subject himself, the defending World welterweight champion switched to his promoter’s hat.
“Don’t really know too much about him,” Mayweather (48-0, 26KOs) told Showtime’s Brian Custer when asked about Thurman, who is coming off of an 8th round stoppage of Luis Collazo this past July in primetime on ESPN. “Seen him a couple of times.”
Prior to his headlining the first edition of Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on ESPN, Thurman played the starring role in the first PBC show on any network. The 26-year old welterweight outpointed Robert Guerrero—a former titlist and past Mayweather in-ring victim—in the inaugural installment of PBC on NBC, with the bout hitting a peak audience of 4 million viewers.
Still his star on the rise isn’t enough to impress Mayweather, who instead would like to see him get down with a young fighter from the Mayweather Promotions stable.
“I think a good fight for him is Errol Spence,” Mayweather said of Thurman’s potential future.
Spence—an unbeaten welterweight from Texas who served on the 2012 U.S. Olympic Boxing team in London—is coming off of a 3rd round knockout win over Phil Lo Greco this past June on NBC. His next fight is slated for September 11 in Toronto-the night before Mayweather-Berto—against an opponent to be determined on a PBC on Spike TV broadcast.

Mayweather Says He Reviewed 147, Berto Was Best Pick

WBC/WBA welterweight champion Floyd "Money" Mayweather (48-0, 26 KOs) is not regretting his selection of Andre Berto (30-3, 23 KOs) as the Showtime Pay-Per-View opponent for September 12 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Mayweather says he reviewed the entire welterweight division and found Berto to be the perfect for what Floyd's is calling the "final fight" of his pro career.
There has been a mountain of criticism over the fight. Berto has gone 3-3 in his last six fights and two of those defeats came against fighters, Robert Guerrero and Victor Ortiz, who Mayweather already beat.
Due to the circumstances of both fighters, the oddsmakers have listed Berto as one of the largest underdogs in the history of pay-per-view fights of this level. Some betting outlets have him as big as an 80-1 underdog.
"When you look at the two divisions I fight in, there's one man who stands all alone. I looked at the division and asked who's always in a tough exciting fight, who has quick hands and who always gives it 100 percent, it was Andre Berto," Mayweather said. "This is a guy I can't overlook. He's dedicated to the sport just like myself and he's going to push me."

WBC/WBA welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) has bombarded on Thursday night by reporters who questioned his decision to face massive underdog Andre Berto on September 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
There were other options, like WBA 'regular' champion Keith Thurman and British star Amir Khan - who's been chasing Mayweather for the last two years.
Mayweather sees nothing that makes Khan a better option than Berto - at least right now. Both Khan and Berto share the same trainer in Virgil Hunter.
"How many championships has Khan won, two. Berto has won two also," Mayweather said.
Berto is seen as a big underdog by the press and the oddsmakers - with betting circles having him listed as small as a 40-1 underdog and as big as an 80-1 underdog.
Mayweather sees him as a very dangerous challenger who will push him to the limit.
"I have been getting backlash," Mayweather said. "They say no one in the sport will buy the fight. I picked him because he is an exciting fighter. My job is to go out there and be a chess player and that is what I did. I found a way to win. Andre Berto is going to push Floyd Mayweather to the limit. That's one thing I do know."
