WBA VP: Santa Cruz Must Face Cuellar in 18 Months

Posted by: Rick Reeno on 8/30/2015 .

By Rick Reeno

The Vice President of the World Boxing Association, Gilberto Jesus Mendoza, has ordered that newly crowned WBA featherweight champion Leo Santa Cruz (31-0-1, 17KOs) take on mandatory challenger Jesus Cuellar (27-1, 21KOs) of Argentina within the next 18months.

Santa Cruz captured the vacant WBA title on Saturday night with a twelve round majority decision over fellow Mexican Abner Mares. The belt became vacant after Nicholas Walters failed to make weight for a June fight with Miguel Marriaga.

The WBA has now ruled that Santa Cruz is the "super champion" at 126-pounds and Cuellar has been elevated from interim to "regular" champion. Per the rules of the WBA, the two must fight within 18 months time.

The WBA belt was only sanctioned for Santa Cruz vs. Mares a few days prior to the fight.

Mendoza explained: "[It was due] to the path of the boxers. After studying their records and achievements, at our discretion they were among the top five featherweights in the world and were given the opportunity to fight for the super championship."

Santa Cruz vs. Cuellar should be easy enough to make with both fighters being advised by Al Haymon.

Santa Cruz will sit down with his team, which includes Haymon, and map out the best option for his next fight. If Cuellar is presented as the next fight, he will go with Cuellar.

"I'll do whatever and go with whatever my team wants. If a fight with Cuellar is out there, then a fight with Cuellar is out there. If there is a rematch with Mares, I'll go with that. First and foremost I have to sit down with my time and go forward from there," Santa Cruz said.

So he gonna duck the best fighters in two divisions at the same damn time as well :ohhh:

Out of all the Featherweight Champions, LSC has the best win:mjpls:

And he's the biggest name:mjpls:

And makes the biggest purses:mjpls:

And draws the highest views:mjpls:

Which means he's The Man at Featherweight:mjpls:

Anyone wanna see Baby Margs, they gonna have to be on a PBC telecast:youngsabo:

No trolling. LSC is The Man at Featherweight (even though after further review, GRJ has the best win out of all the Champions followed by LSC)

He's gonna call the shots, being that not only is he the only undefeated Champion, but he makes the biggest purses, is the biggest draw, and has the most views.

If anyone wants to fight HIM, they're gonna have to come do it on a PBC card.

There's only 1 person who's the definite A-side at both Junior Featherweight & Featherweight at the same time.....and that's LSC. If Loma wanted to fight him, he would have to fight on a PBC card to do it, and we all know Bob Arum aint gonna let that happen without being forced too.

I read your response to @TheNig before I posted.

You're saying all the champs will beat him...but yall just said this about Mares beating LSC:mjpls:

There's nothing that tells me it's a given that Lomachenko, GRJ, or Lee Selby will beat LSC when they've all lost before to lesser opponents (going by resumes) and LSC is coming off a victory over a former Featherweight Champion who was ranked the 4th best Featherweight in the world coming into the fight.

When did I say Mares beats him :francis:

It's my opinion that they all beat him, nothing is a given when we are making predictions breh.

Like I said his biggest win was outdone by a senior citizen, I'll do any type of bet you want if he fights any of the guys I mentioned.

Especially GRJ, he will give baby Margs the same work Mosley gave big bro.

Being that GRJ has more of a chance of fighting LSC than any other Featherweight Champion does, we will revisit that last sentence in the near future:sas1:
