Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema announced today that director David Frankel’s Collateral Beauty, starring Will Smith, Helen Mirren, Edward Norton, Naomie Harris and Michael Pena, will open in theaters on December 16, 2016, the same date that Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm previously scheduled Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Collateral Beauty centers on a New York advertising executive (Smith) who experiences a deep personal tragedy. His colleagues devise an unconventional plan to break him out of his depression, which works – but not in a way that anyone imagined.

The PalmStar Media and Likely Story project is produced by Anonymous Content’s Michael Sugar and Bard Dorros, along with Allan Loeb, who wrote the script. Palmstar CEO Kevin Frakes will executive produce with Anthony Bregman of Likely Story and Steven Pearl. Smith’s Overbrook will co-produce.

The Chicken Soup for the Soul movie, which Warner Bros. had set for a December 16, 2016 release, will now open sometime in 2017.

Directed by Gareth Edwards, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk and Riz Ahmed.

Interesting cast, interesting premise:ehh: Don't know why he and the studio decided to go up against another Star Wars movie, which is sure to be a Juggernaunt, though of course not as record breaking as Episode 7: The Finn Sleeps but still...bold choice.

This nikka's ego is out of control. Release your damn movie in November and stop asking for Ls. You'd think after Concussion didn't do so hot, he'd have learned. :francis:

I don't think it's ego for real. When you release dramas in December or even November, depending on the subject, you're not really expecting them to be huge movies. any studio is smart enough to know that. That will be his oscar movie for the year

Sounds like an Award Bait movie that the studio is releasing with probably a two-pronged marketing plan in place.
Release at a peak time for it to get viewed by awards voters and let it be counter-programming for the few (likely older) movie-goers who have no interest in big sci-fi movies like Star Wars.

He confirmed Bad Boys 3 on a UK radio show:blessed:

What he needs to do is what he was doing in the mid 2000's and what Leo and Matt Damon have made a career of.

Do your "serious/Oscar bait" movie and then follow it up with a blockbuster to let the fanbase eat. He was doing this damn near PERFECTLY before he took a break to groom Jaden. He did Ali and then followed with MIB 2 and Bad Boys 2. Then he did Pursuit Of Happyness and followed it up with I Am Legend. He tried to do the dramedy Action mash with Hancock to mixed results. Then he stumbled with Seven Pounds but followed it up with MIB3.

Concussion was a fantastic effort and he's following it up with Suicide Squad, which looks to be a winner and will establish him early in the DC universe. Now if this Collateral Beauty movie hits with critical acclaim and Bad Boys 3 drops next summer he could be back on top

Will's problem though, is that he thinks he's more important than directors. Cruise, Pitt, Leo, Damon, Denzel, etc. all climbed their way to the top by working with major directors. Will Smith has only worked with Tony Scott and Michael Mann (and I guess we can throw in Michael Bay). Compare that to the lists of directors the people above (and Depp/Clooney/etc.) have worked with and it's a wrap. Will's had a hell of a run, but the limitations of his career game plan are becoming obvious.
