Peter Landesman will write and direct the movie, which will be produced by Ridley Scott

Having pulled out of Legendary's sci-fi movie “Brilliance” last week, Will Smith is in talks to star in the football concussion drama “Game Brain” for Sony and Scott Free, an individual familiar with the project told TheWrap.

Peter Landesman (“Parkland”) will write and direct the film, which is based on the GQ article by Jeanne Marie Laskas.

Ridley Scott and Giannina Facio will produce for Scott Free along with Larry Shuman and David Woltoff of the Shuman Company.

Smith is nearing a deal to play Dr. Bennet Omalu, the forensic neuropathologist who first discovered the existence of CTE in a professional football player and worked tirelessly to raise public awareness.

Scott envisions a morality tale in the vein of “The Insider” that will feature Omalu as a whistleblower caught between his ethical obligations and the hard realities of the professional sports business.

Following a string of lawsuits against the NFL, football concussions have become a hot topic in Hollywood, with Parkes/MacDonald developing an adaptation of “League of Denial” and Isaiah Washington set to star in the indie movie “Game Time Decision.” Both projects would be at a disadvantage should Smith close a deal to star in “Game Brain,” thereby giving that project a major edge on its competition.

Smith next stars as a con man opposite Margot Robbie in the Warner Bros. movie “Focus.” He's represented by CAA and Overbrook Entertainment.

The news was first reported by Variety.

People saying After Earth made $250 million worldwide need to realize that it had a budget of $130 million and probably another $40 or so million in marketing.

A film needs to make double it's budget or sometimes more just to break even, let alone make a profit. So yeah, After Earth was a flop.

The only films that Sony really makes a decent profit on are Spider-Man films and after this latest one, that money might start drying up.

But your not factoring in TV and Home Video sales so it made more than 240 Million. Also "Men in Black 3" made profit for Sony. As for Will possible new drama "Brain Game", I'm cool with that. Will could use a solid drama. I just think he should do "Independence Day 2" and "Bad Boys 3" cause those are actually sequels fans would want to see him in.

The TV and DVD sales may help but not very much in this case.

Trust me, shyt was a flop. It was even compared to Waterworld which is one of the biggest bombs ever. Like I said, Sony pictures is hurting and the only films really keeping them alive are the Spider-Man films
