Will Smith has dropped out of Legendary Pictures' sci-fi thriller Brilliance, based on Marcus Sakey's novel of the same name.
Universal will distribute the film, which director Julius Onah (God Particle) was hoping to start shooting this summer. Smith's exit ultimately came down to timing,
Deadlinereports, although Legendary is still in talks with
Noomi Rapace to co-star.
Set in a world where one percent of people called "brilliants" are born with heightened cognitive senses, the story follows a federal agent, Nick Cooper, whose extraordinary abilities make him exceptional at hunting terrorists.
The first book, released in August 2013, is the first part in a planned three-book series. The second book, A Better World, is due out June 17.
