Wilfred isn't real. Frodo's brain was projecting the "Wilfred" character onto the neighbor's actual real normal dog.

Overall I would say I enjoyed the finale and the revelation at the end, ultimately made the most sense. The choice that Ryan ultimately made was an interesting one. I have heard some theories about how the ending could have been interpreted differently, Elijah Wood gave his thoughts to Vulture on the finale here

While the show had its ups and downs, overall I enjoyed the series as a whole. It has some really funny moments with the way dogs behave (even to a non-dog owner like me). I always liked the quotes they would use in the opening moments and some of the meditations they did on sanity, happiness, etc were really well done. While the show had some solid supporting players, it was very much a 2 man team with Ryan and Wilfred steering the ship. I really can't think of too many shows which were able to do that.
