Why was Jericho buried so bad during his Undisputed reign?

I don't think the "burying" happened until the HHH/Steph storyline which was ridiculous...
But anyone who didn't know HHH was gettin' the title at Mania is prob'ly retarded. When he made the big return that January, it was plain to see. Now HOW THEY DID IT is another story. Jericho was waaaay in the back seat to HHH and Steph, when he could've been right there with them. It just turned into a bunch of shyt with HHH divorcing Steph, Steph takin' HHH's dog, HHH tryin' to pedigree Steph, Steph tryin' to keep the title from HHH... and Jericho more or less being a pawn in the middle of it all, when he could've been a manipulator in the HHH/Steph situation, which would've put his role on par with theirs.
Also, he was kinda midcardish, even with the title. It didn't seem like he was the top heel, he was like a midcard heel that was getting a chance with the belt.
