New Yorkers were very arrogant in the late 80s and early 90s. They tried to little brother the other regions. NWA was booed at the Apollo the first time they performed.

Anyway, when the west took the spotlight with gangsta rap, the west got a lot of hate from the media outlets who blamed them for fukking up hip hop and all these media outlets were based in NY.

While Ice Cube was not targeted, he resented the hate on the west.

Then you had rappers like Tim Dog drop fukk Compton and Master Ace dropped Slaughterhouse. So they retaliated with

It was on after that.

The East Coast Started This War pg 1

This past week, I've heard three songs that are guaranteed to intensify the current east /west coast 'war'. The first comes from Ice Cube, Mack 10 and WC. Collectively known as the Westside Connection, this trio has lived up to their pledge to bring this drama with their new song entitled 'Bow Down'. A smoldering, ominous beat, inflammatory lyrics, an engaging hook and a dope video which just premiered on BET will undoubtly have folks from Cali proudly throwing up the 'W' and have folks from back east steamed.

Some will ask what's up with Cube and company constantly dissing the east coast? In a recent conversation with WC, he explained that really its not a dis to the entire east..their main bone of contention is with New York. Secondly, it's not with the entire city but rather with the New York critic who happens to be a writer, dj or even another artists that has been forever disrespecting and minimizing the accomplishments and success of west coast artists. As WC it was about time someone grew some balls and said 'enough is enough and stood up for Cali'. The entire upcoming Westside Connection album is definitely gonna set off at the very least a war on vinyl that'll make the legendary '86-'87 BDP..Juice Crew NYC bridge and borough wars pale in comparison.

The real answer is that Brand Nubian's first album and a few other NY centric albums didn't sell what they were supposed to. That would be at least gold, in that era. The albums were great, even classics but either from bootlegging or fans not supporting, they didn't sell what they were supposed to.
Cube was on his winning streak of solo albums then, and post Cube NWA sold big on the efil4 album.
NY hip hop fans, and media outlets (the Source and hot 97 were the main ones) didn't like that NYC was no longer the driving force in hip hop culture or record sales, so the backlash started. They started fronting on Cube's record spins when his post NWA stuff used to get love in nyc (video music box, underground radio).
Cube was getting backlash for something he didn't do.......which is to cause NY hip hop to not sell as big as his stuff.

He fired back .

Because New York nikkas was on some hating shyt when the West started to become big in the early 90s so they started dissing them out of jealousy. Ice cube had nothing but love for them but eventually he got tired of they’re shyt and struck back. :yeshrug:

A lot of things u left out. Why did u leave out the part about how Cube alligned with the Zulu Nation after NWAs crew tried to violate him in front of Cubes wife and thats what influenced him to go in the conscious direction in the early 90's?

The truth according to Ice Cube: “It was thick in the air. I was more upset that we came all the way to New York – finally getting the respect we deserve – and we fukking up their seminar.” Da Lench Mob and the Zulu Nation both had your back, right? “Yeah, everybody had my back that day. Me, I wasn’t worried, I was more upset that we came out there and fukked their shyt up.”

Straight Outta Compton: fact-checking the film … with Ice Cube

U just totally left out how Zulu Nation was holding him down on numerous occasions and how he abandoned them which left a bitter taste in the UZNs mouth. I dont know why Tim Dog was brought up when he gave love to Cube. Notice how on the song Cross Em Out And Put A K WC goes after Q Tip but did u ever ask why would Cube allow that when Tip is Zulu and Zulu held him down when he needed it? Cube shoulda told WC not to do that.

I wanna say what's happening to my man, Afrika Bambaataa
And the mighty Zulu Nation
- I gotta Say Wussup

Notice right after his crew....And before acknowledging PE he acknowledges Zulu on the track "I gotta Say Wussup" Because they were holding him down when his own West coast peers were at war. UZN would later express that Cube just abandoned Zulu after they held him down when he needed it, basically saying Cube was disloyal, although Cube would make up for it years later. So all that "Oh well new york was saying this and that" is bullshyt compared to the fact that Cube had a personal relationship with the biggest crew from NYC and no one is speaking on how he was out of pocket for abandoning NYC who held him down against those from his own city.

And all this talk of East coast hate is exaggerated. Wasnt Treach on the hook of Eazys "Only If U want it?" Wasnt Eazy E in Naughtys Hip Hop Hooray video? Didnt Treach shout out Cypress Hill on Hip Hop Hooray? Wasnt Eazy in Run DMCs Down With The King video? Didnt one of Cubes most popular songs have Das Efx on it? Didnt Biggies intro to Ready To Die acknowledge that Snoops Thaa Shiznit was one of the hardest tracks around that time? 2pac, Live Squad and Treach were all cool at one point. I dare anyone to point out were NYC was more negative then positive towards the west. U cant do it.
