I don’t understand how adults can believe in religion but think the moon landing is fake. I used to think people were getting stupider and they kinda are but I think with the advancement in medicine dumb folks who would died young from their stupidity are thriving and spreading their ignorance.

I remember hearing a podcast interviewing a British guy with a PhD that studies conspiracy theories and theorists (can't remember the podcast).

People who believe conspiracy theories tend to be people who sense a lack of control over their own lives. Especially when it comes to events that directly affect them but they can't directly influence or observe in return.

Subscribing to and/or coming up with these theories is, therefore, a way of exerting control over their environment. ("This is what the experts say, but I know what's REALLY going on").

They see it as resolving the cognitive dissonance between their lot in life and where they think they should be. Very few people who truly believe in CT's are winning in life, and if they are, they promote them only if they have something personal to gain.

Respectfully, your statement is similar to others and is part of the problem. The people in science in this case NASA should be clearly explaining the issue but they don't. Then when people come up with their own theories with limited information, they are called dumb.
