get the Enrolled Agent designation for under $400.00
get a Certified Bookkeeper Certification for under $300.00
and a Quickbooks Pro Advisor designation for $60 per month

:mindblown: I get all of that and I can pretty much do the same shyt a CPA can do in a fraction of the time. 5 exams. 5 exams I need and im set. What the fukk am I doing :snoop:

I've been wasting the past year and 11k in student loans on bullshyt electives I don't need just to earn credits.

Major changes coming for me in 2014. fukk this college shyt :pacspit: I only got 70 credits and I need 150 to get a CPA.

Degree was in accounting. I originally when to school for a degree in Computer Science when I got out of the military in 2000. I stopped going. I started back last August because i've been doing taxes for the past 5 years. My motivation to go back to school was this shytty job market. I was laid off from AT&T in 2010 after 6 years with the company. When I left i was making 61k a year. It's been impossible to get another gig making that much with no degree. Accounting and Medical is basically recession proof. So I wanted to go for the gold and get my CPA. The problem with this shyt is that i'm in my 30's. Don't got time to be taking useless classes. CPA would be ideal but at my age the odds of me starting with a Big 4 firm is slim to none by the time I finish. I'm to the point where I want to do my own thing and if I have to work for other people I would rather be a 1099 worker.

I don't know why I didn't think of doing it this way sooner. :snoop:

There are 3 levels

Tax Preparer
Enrolled Agent
CPA
Tax Lawyer

Tax Lawyers are used a few times a year for big projects
CPA's you really just paying for the title
In terms of the tax side, Enrolled Agents hold the same weight as a CPA
Becoming a Certified Bookkeeper covers the accounting side.

I can have both designations by spring time. Anybody can be a QuickBooks Pro Adviser, you just have to join and pay a monthly fee and get unlimited support and training.

you already in. might as well just finish what you started. you're almost there. it'll pay off.

I work. Don't have the luxury. I need 80 more credits to need the 150 requirement. Then study for the CPA exams. That's 3 more years at least . I took off this last semester because I was burnt out and the shyt just hit me. I'm at a dead end job with no upward mobility and quite frankly the job market is ass. I've grown tired of going on interviews doing the :sadcam: please hire me massa routine.

Doing it this way will give me enough credentials to focus on my profession only and instead of looking for wage positions I can look for contracts and partnerships. Again an enrolled agent carries just as much clout as a CPA when it comes to tax side. Bookkeeping is bookkeeping. I can just combine the two. I have until now and the end of February to study for and take the enrolled agent exams. I pass and will get certified 60 days later. I will have everything by May or June. In that same time frame the most I can get is 24 more credits and that's if I took 3 classes per semester which I can't because I have to work.

I would do everything honestly but most of all finish your bachelors. Also see if you can get an associates in business etc whatever you're closest to. Something is better than nothing on paper. I think an associates is 60 credits. You'll make back the 20-30k you end up spending in 5-10 years. If you can get a good internship, placement or references you can probably fall into a position and be back on track or ahead of where you were when you left AT&T. Your job is recession proof after all. Also a decent amount of people will give up or wont go to school and as you get older your experience and degree will mean that much more. Also you don't need to end up at a top 4 to make the bucks. Gotta play the long game man.

Also if you're in a dead end job now get certified in something you enjoy and then take night classes or classes online(if it's your thing, I can't get into it). If you're in Jersey I'm sure they have classes at all kinds of crazy hours like they do in NY.

A lot of people don't start serious careers till they're in their late 20's 30's anyways.
I have a decent circle of friends who went to Ivy Leagues and top schools they're the only people I know who had serious jobs in their fields in their 20's.

I'm pretty bright and ended up working for myself but that's only because of the position I was in and was able to create.

If I could do it again I'm not sure where I would be. My friends who work for companies have almost no free time but they have relative job security and apartments in Manhattan.
Idk breh

I my goal isn't to be an employee for a firm. I want to be an independent contactor. I'm those certifications carry more weight than a degree because it shows that I had to show a level of knowledge and competence. The only difference with a CPA is the 2 year experience requirement. Degrees are just pieces of paper. There was a time where you didn't need a degree to take the bar exam now you do. Schools are for profit businesses. I can just by the books, study and get certified on my own.

I can also lie about having a degree like I've been doing. I live in San Diego from 1996 to 2005. I lied and said I got an associates degree in 1999. The school I picked to use went bankrupt in 2002 so even if a company checked they would probably hit a few dead ends along the way.

this shouldn't discourage you but i also took cpa classes but in the middle of a class i once looked around and looked at the ppl in there and just said fuq that sh1t. wasn't for me. nothing was making sense to me. nothing. rofl. so i just went the computer science route and sh1t makes sense.

i'm the type that thing i can do anything. i don't really depend on "talent". my talent is just doing anything i want to. i can drown myself in anything and it'll make sense. but at the time of doing my cpa's life was distracting me. but given that chance again i would do it. i can disconnect from life and do what i have to.

in school i was beastly in math and physics so i tried accounting, architecture... all those classes help me today in my business.

just stay focus and nerd it up. even if it'll take 5 years. 5yrs goes by fast.

Right. With that said doesn't a CPA ratify that knowledge, competence, and experience? Depending on where you go to school, that's your way into a Big 4 if that's what you want.
It sounds like it means a lot to you. I think it's bullshyt too, and we've all been scammed, I think college should be free. At the end of the day if you want the health insurance, job security and 401k sometimes you have to play ball. There aren't always easy ways around somethings no matter how focused and intelligent you are.

I added on to my other post.

Again, my goal is to work for myself and build a book of business. The only thing that will matter is if my certifications are current and I know what I'm doing. A degree won't matter.

CPA covers taxes and accounting. You can get a bachelors in accounting and call yourself an accountant. A CPA confirms you know what you're doing and that you have at least two years experience.

Anybody can be a tax preparer. An enrolled agent confirms you know what you're doing because you've been tested by the irs and you are required to maintain a certain level of education every year. Both CPA and enrolled agents can represent clients in an audit. Regular tax prepares can't. The tests are hard.

The employment game is rigged so I'm trying to flip it and create alternative revenue streams other than just relying on someone to hire me and pay a decent wage.

you might wanna get a 9-5 one time in future and work for a fortune 500 company to get your money up and make your resume look good. it's good to have that option. even if only temporary. a degree might not matter but when your sitting in a table with niccas making 100k, 150k, 200k a year and feel the swag its not the best feeling... even if your making ok money.
