Why Some Black Puerto Ricans Choose ‘White’ on the Census

I guess. Many honestly identify as white. They marry white at fairly high rate too.

Then Puerto Rican cac's are the weakest on Earth..

Those Ricans should fly to Spain and tell those Spanish cac's that they too are White..and see what happens

Why? The Census still lets you identify as Hispanic regardless of what racial box you check. And as if being White is going to preserve PR culture and identity

I think overall PR are more down and associate with AAs more than any other non-Black immigrants. I have known Black-PR couples who I almost don't call interracial given the cultural similarity and shared African ancestry. But let's just be real. We are the outgroup and some don't want to be "dragged down" by associating with us. Latin American Racial Hierarchy 101. I knew someone that once dated a White looking PR dude and they got along fine but broke up after his parents threatened to disown him for bringing a negra home.

If someone wants to call themselves White, fine by me. There are plenty of down PR left to be bothered worrying about those that want no part of us.

Geez Latin America's attempts to erase blackness tho. I know we had it bad here but we've always had some form of pro black pushback.

I suspect many of em don't know exactly who they are outside of being Puerto Rican unlike other Hispanic groups, Puerto Ricans have a tendency to more often than not choose to dissociate being grouped with black or white races, the only time I hear any consider themselves white are the boule ones.

Puerto Rican being a nationality and not a race I think puts them in a bind of picking sides when many would rather just be Ricans.

I don't have a problem with this. They want their identity to remain intact not lumped in with everyone else. So do we, that's why we have ADOS now.

Honestly articles like this prove to me that making it clear that we are black Americans more important now than ever. When other groups of people can come to your home And try to distance themselves from Because in their eyes your undesirable Then you have a problem I will shout from the roof. I am not. Hispanic or West Indian or any other type of black but I'm a black American And have contributed more to this Society than any other group.

If the government starts to comply with our demands for reparations and all these other groups of people are going to start coming with their hands out. . If you black American is definitely something to think about. If you're always around these groups do you want to understand some of there psychology?

That's a very unique regional experience and not the norm.

Because they know black ppl will beat their ass if they try to claim black. They know we don't accept them so they gotta choose white because white ppl don't care because they want to boost their numbers. They will still get treated like dogshyt so it really don't matter. Also all puerto ricans(black and white) are ashamed of being puerto rican so they either want to be black which we don't accept them or they want to be white which white ppl hate them and look at them as mutts
