I remember reading about the Westboro Baptist Church, and these guys were protesting during funerals of military personnel as well as hating on gays, and were harsh religious.

And the supreme court said what they're doing is protected based on the freedom of speech ...

How come shyt like this is acceptable?

Because peaceful assembly is protected under the 1st amendment. If the Supreme Court decided to not allow the WBC to troll, then it could set a dangerous precedent.

From what I see from the outisde, religious groups get much more liberty to shyt on others, because they can justify it by their "faith". It's ok for a religious person to insult gays because being gay supposedly goes against his faith, and if you charge him for doing so he'll turn around and cry about how you're "persecuting" him. Same goes with some Islamist in Europe who can call for killing infidels and not be charged, because if you chqrge them, then you're "a racist"

You're allowed to hurl slurs all you want. The government cannot persecute you because of that, again the 1st amendment.

But once that "bias" leads to you injuring a protected group (gay, AA) then you're act is deemed a hate crime...I think that's part of the Civil Rights Act. Though don't quote me on that.

And its been a while since I looked it up so I dont remember it exactly, but I believe there is a stipulation in law for "fighting words" not being protected speech... you might even be able to legally break a niccaz face for using them, but I gotta look that up to be sure.

Correct, Fighting words are not a protected form of free speech. You can't assault someone though. Although, I believe in Denver they have a law where you're allowed to beat someone up if they use a racial slur against you. Might be wrong about that though.
