Black women been twerking since the beginning of time. They brought it to America but it didn't have an official name. The south started callin it twerkin about 20 years ago and when the south (particularly Atlanta) became the Mecca of black pop culture a little over a decade later the whole country started using they slang. It became kind of a 'thing' when YouTube first hit and the twerk team got net famous a few years later. After that, a bunch of birds started making twerk vids hoping they could have the same success but none of those broads got anything more than a few thirsty YouTube comments until Miley Cyrus did one and introduced it to mainstream white America. Now it's a meme no different than planking.
