I think that when it comes to terraforming it would be easier to do on a global scale than specific target zones. targeting specific areas would require concern for the affects it would have on the surrounding ecosystems which may not be under the control of the terraformers. if you are changing an entire planet that would not be a concern as only the end result would matter.

damn... my sun was trying to ask a legit question and the women with their emotions showed up quick trying to derail.

Higher Learning is supposed to be a place where people can ask interesting questions and get real answers, not derision and anitipathy.
Yeah but fukk Mowgli, he's the number one source of derision and antipathy here. People here have posted a ton of science thread that don't get derailed. He's the #1 derailer of them and it's not even close.

Anyway, this question was stupid. Terraforming is the process of making a planet hospitable to human life, and that entails changing all the biochemical conditions; the atmosphere, land temperature, everything, to a point where it could sustain life. You'd obviously need water and oxygen, and you'd have to seed the planet with plant life and bacteria and allow them to work.

Terraforming a desert wouldn't even be an accurate notion to posit because a desert is already at the stage of what terraforming would like to achieve, meaning people can live there. The conditions are just very harsh. Terraforming doesn't mean you transform a whole planet into a lush garden.

Deserts exist because of wind patterns that don't allow clouds to form in certain dry locations, mountain ranges blocking moisture to desert regions, and cold currents that sop up moisture. You couldn't get rid of deserts without somehow managing to upset the entire geological and biological balance of the planet with catastrophic consequences. Deserts have to exist. They exist on other planets snd they would still exist after we potentially terraformed them.

they want to terraform habitats other than earth because they're planning to leave earth completely and leave nikkas (non-whites) behind to fend for themselves.

they see the damage they've done to this planet, the waters are poisoned, the air is poisoned etc, they'd rather start new with no nikkas, robots can be the new nikkas because they'll have EXPLICIT control over robots.

lol, wow.

I'm assuming this has to do with Mars. The idea is that since Mars has frozen water, releasing greenhouses gases into the atmosphere would gradually warm the planet and melt the water re-creating the Martian oceans. After some time certain plant life would be put on the planet to begin bringing oxygen to the planet, gradually bringing more complex plants until you finally have a planet like Earth with water, trees, and a habitable environment. You still have shytloads of radiation to get rid of before people are walking around Mars like it's Earth. Not to mention, the distance will still have a say in the temps so I'd say at best Mars would be kinda like Scandinavia or Russia. Honestly, terraforming would still only be a temp fix because Mars is too small to keep an atmosphere like Earth's together it would all go back to shyt eventually. Not to mention one of it's asteroid moons is destined to collide with the planet at some point so we'd have to worry about that too.

I always imagined that Mars would be a trading post and go between for asteroid miners looking to get rare or in demand minerals and metals back to Earth. That is if humankind smartened up and got far enough to do planetary colonization. :ld:

How do you get rid of radiation?

So no matter how polluted earth gets, if its livable, its terraformed. Well thats a downer.

Great question, I think they're still figuring that part out actually. But usually radiation takes about 300 years to fully break down, terraforming itself would probably take as long. So I'd think that we'd need to create that protective bubble(i.e. ozone layer) to block any additional radiation and then let the remainder break itself down in order to get rid of it. The protective layer would have to come from the creation of a new atmosphere itself.

Nah. The Earth is the finished product of terraforming. What we're threatening to do with pollution is turn the planet into another Venus which is literally hell incarnate.
