Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven
Because it works.

Kevin Hart once told a lesson he learned from Eddie Murphy. Eddie was explaining why most comedians don't have good acting careers. He said that comedians always want to try and ACT like someone else. Disappear into some role. If they wanted you to disappear, they'd call and hire a real actor. They want me playing Eddie Murphy, playing a cop. Or me playing Eddie Murphy, playing an ex con. They want the laugh. The voice. The jokes. The comedian...... They don't come to a Kevin Hart movie to watch him act like Denzel Washington..

You think it's so simple, but it's truth. People hire RR to see Van Wilder. They don't want to see him playing some straight lawyer. They'd just call Leo or somebody for that. They don't want Tiffany Haddish acting like Julia Roberts. They'd just call Julia Roberts. No they need a ghetto black woman, call Tiffany.. They need a boyish grown ass silly man... Call Ryan... They need a funny black guy but not too ghetto, call Kevin...

They wouldn't even call these people if they came in trying to seriously act.

Some actors have range, others are "personality" actors...they are in a movie because of the personality they bring. Reynolds is one example of a personality actor. Clint Eastwood is another. Other actors have a combo of range and personality like Al Pacino.

shyt, cats say Denzel does the same shyt too!

I do think his performance as Alonzo in Training Day was legit Best Actor material esp seeing him be the villain for once. And he did the shyt so smoothly. Was better than his Malcolm X performance IMO because of that.
Spoiler: people say it for practically every actor because they can't actually gage acting ability

Because he's primarily hired to be a "movie star" and not an actor...

Nah, it is most actors. Denzel has range, leo has range, Johnny Depp had range.. most of these actors, especially the "funny" ones just being they damn self :manny: or they some kind of type cast.

It doesnt matter if it is Deadpool, Green Lantern, 6 Underground, Hobbs and Shaw, RIPD etc

He ALWAYS resorts to his one trick pony shtick which is Van Wilder. I mean every single movie. The only move that he remotely tried to be an actual actor was the movie with Denzel Washington I think it was called safe house. Even then he still had moments of Van Wilder.

Why is that?

He made me not like Deadpool. As a person who has read Deadpool comics, that was more Ryan Reynolds than Deadpool. Way too over the top.

One Hour Photo received positive reviews from film critics, with praise for Romanek's writing and Cronenweth's cinematography, while Williams' against-type performance received universal critical acclaim, earning him a Saturn Award for Best Actor.[6] The film was also a commercial success, grossing $52.2 million against a $12 million budget.
