Facts.

Biz said Prince Paul was the one that showed other producers they could make beats without sampling James Brown all day. He pioneered album skits too.

But he was the go-to-guy for a minute. A lot of legends were f*cking with him in the Golden Era. Stetsasonic, BDP, Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, Slick Rick, 3rd Bass, Kane, etc.

Yessir bro!

God bless Markie! He was right. Because everyone was stuck on James Brown records

Yup, dude would sometimes just produce skits for albums, I think of the skit “you play too much” on Meth’s Tical 2000, lol

I was hoping for more from Paul on Meth’s but in true Paul fashion, it was just the skit but it’s not like he wasn’t busy producing his own music and for many others then

Yessir! He even produces for Living Colour

multiple Chris Rock albums

Yessir! Chris is a huge Prince Paul fan

I personally absolutely prefer De La with PP over their later works :yeshrug:

I wouldn't say they fell off or anything, but they became much less interesting to me without him. I honestly never go back to their post-PP work unless I just want to be reminded of their catalog.

Enough had been said about why Paul isn't ranked high 'generally'. But his discography speaks for itself, he's in my top 10 and I wouldn't bat an eye at somebody calling him goat.

Aside from stellar beatmaking, he's a great concept guy. From the De La albums to Gravediggaz to Prince Among Thieves etc his albums tell cohesive stories, he might be the only producer who's skits I like.

Same. Their later albums are solid and have dope songs, but they're missing the personality and charm Paul added to them. After listening to the Prince Paul interview series with Open Mike Eagle, it sounded like De La dropped him cuz they wanted a more serious tone. I think that was a mistake.

Agreed- outside the topic asking why it escapes the consensus , Paul has always been a top tier producer in my mind.

Same.

When they were beefing for a minute, and he left, you could feel his absence in the music.

He started working on Stakes Is High and had the concepts and tracks and all that, but left mid-album after they all started having issues. Truth be told, that was really the last De La album I cared about. The first 4 albums are essential. But once Paul left, De La was definitely not as dope. Anybody claiming they were, is lying like a MF.

He was the engine for that group. Most definitely.

I think maybe because he enjoys experimenting and collaborating on creating albums, with his own often the most experimental, that you don't hear "Prince Paul" and think specific beats- you think full projects and producers discussions are often just discussing bangers.

Like these are great beats themselves but the song concepts don't let you ride with the beat like you would on a standard rap single.

That flattery one is so damn good. First time hearing it. Instantly had to hit Soulseek to download a high quality version of it
