He’s had one of the best careers yet whenever top 5 or top 10 producers are discussed, he’s never really mentioned

Why???? :patrice:
Doesn't have any mainstream hits besides the early De La Soul singles like Me, Myself, & I

I think there were issues with De La Soul albums not being on streaming services for years? I'm download or buy gang so I don't know for sure.

Edit: He's definitely one of my all time favorites, one of the most forward thinking and eclectic hip-hop producers. Just had the first Handsome Boy Modelling School album in rotation. He's a lowkey dude tho, weirdly enough even Madlib marketed himself better and he's lowkey too

I liked Buhloone Mindstate, but Prince Paul don't have signature beats like Pete Rock or Large Professor, Marley Marl, Easy Mo Bee, RZA, DJ Premier. Issa couple producers that come to mind before thinkin' 'bout Prince Paul. How many times Stetsasonic come up on this board? Prince Paul didn't have strong rappers carrying his beats except De La... it's hard to be part of the conversation when there were other producers puttin' out great beats for great rappers.

He's dope for sure but I remember years ago watching a interview where Pos said they all had a hand in the production on those first three records he even claimed he did say no go . Also De La had a pretty strong run after he stopped working with them so they never really missed him.

What memorable or classic production did Paul do after De La?

Also there's no doubt he's respected but if think of the well known producers who came to fore late 90s and 00s like Dilla, Kanye, Just Blaze, Alc etc. they would all mention likes of Dre, Premier, Pete Rock and Rza as an influence before someone like Paul. I mean think the likes Q Tip and Erick Sermon are little underrated. When you consider all of this there is no place for Paul in the top ten.

I am comfortable and I love you
He gets overlooked in these discussions because he’s not the run of the mill boom bap producer with “bangers”. His style is more understated and he tailors his sound to each group/MC he works with. He also has bodies of work you have to listen to in order to get how great he is, (all the De La albums, all his solo LP’s, Handsome Boy Modeling School) and though they all have his stamp, they sound unique.

He never really worked with what would be considered the “upper echelon” of east coast rappers consistently and besides Me, Myself and I, he never had a “big” single like that. And as somebody else said De La Soul didn’t lose a step without him so he never seemed all that essential.

I think maybe because he enjoys experimenting and collaborating on creating albums, with his own often the most experimental, that you don't hear "Prince Paul" and think specific beats- you think full projects and producers discussions are often just discussing bangers.

Like these are great beats themselves but the song concepts don't let you ride with the beat like you would on a standard rap single.

I was listening to that My Friend THe Popmaster beat the other week :fire: .
Prince Paul has some crazy work and it sounds different then anyone else out there but he is not as "commercially" successful as other names mentioned that are considered legends so to speak. That Prince Among Thieves album had some HEAT on it and De La's earlier work with him was dope etc. Handsome Boy Modeling School also had some fire on it but it was not as dope as Prince Among Thieves which was a masterpiece IMO. Gravediggaz 6 FT DEEP iis some of his best work as well (He did QUITE a few beats on that project) and it's a cult classic. I would say overall he is underrated.

He was one of the main people that most rappers mentioned as "the best", at one point.

But this was back in the late 80's and early 90's. People like Cube, Slick Rick, Kane and LL used to always speak about him being that guy. And he has the classics under his belt that most producers would kill for. But he was never one of those guys that likes being in front of the camera and promoted like how producers were after the mid-90's.

When labels started using producers as marketing tools, a lot of the dope producers who didn't like the limelight got pushed to the back. Without Prince Paul, there is no De La. So he should be respected forever in this.

All facts

And that’s one of the things I admire about Paul

He doesn’t show boat and gloat like most do

But your absolutely right, he was always praised for her work in the early days and and I too think that his work with De La alone cement his name forever among the best :myman:

He produced Chris Rock’s Bigger and Blacker album too! Lol

I don’t think most people realize how much shyt Paul has produced and it’s such a variety too

Facts.

Biz said Prince Paul was the one that showed other producers they could make beats without sampling James Brown all day. He pioneered album skits too.

But he was the go-to-guy for a minute. A lot of legends were f*cking with him in the Golden Era. Stetsasonic, BDP, Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, Slick Rick, 3rd Bass, Kane, etc.
