This is extremely important, and is the main reason why The D.R. Initially left Haiti in the first place and NOT racism (most of the generals and fathers of the independence movements were black/haitian descendants themselves) . It was just easier to see that they didn't want to be part of a sinking ship and that the tax burden of paying off that immense debt would have been too much for their fledgling economy so they decided to bounce out of the union. Not being entitled to paying off that debt immediately gave them an advantage when it came to economic sovereignty.- DR never had to pay a independence tax while Haiti was paying their tax, which amounted to billions of dollars in modern times, 100+ years after their independence. The French are cuththroat motherfukkers
- Papa Doc & Baby Doc. Papa Doc was a megalomaniac that robbed poor Haitians of their land and killed and incarcerated all of his political opponents. The first major wave of Haitian immigrants to the US had a disproportionate amount of educated professionals who were trying to escape his repressive regime. Then when Papa Doc died, he is succeeded by his teenage son, who was the youngest president in the world, whom eventually became a dictator.
- After Baby Doc was overthrown, the successive regimes wanted to attract foreign investors and use them as a catalyst for their production economy. So the Haitian government gave foreign investors tons of tax exemptions so they could move their production to Haiti. Many companies flocked to Haiti because the labor was dirt cheap and they wouldnt have to pay any taxes on profit or raw materials. So companies were importing materials, using Haitian labor to make valuable products, and exporting products to Europe and the US. The Haitian economy would become too dependent on Western markets in addition from not making any money off the production of goods in Haiti.

I read a article I think on this site, that said Haiti's deforestation claim is a lie. They oconfirmed it with satellite images.Yeah, the mountains in Haiti cut off the rainfall. The land is hard to farm and they have deforestation issues as well.
Nah to put it more succinctly the forces controlling the eastern side of Hispaniola resisted Haitian occupation but from all that I've read the majority of the creoles living there at the time really didn't care until they were able to form an identity for themselves and Haiti's financial troubles became apparent. You have to remember that right after the Haitian revolution popped off France bought the Spanish colony on the island from spain and ruled it from 1795–1809 and intended to use it for the strategic purpose of re invading the western part (Saint-Domingue) that was under naval blockade by the British at the time. When the Haitian army began their incursions into the former Spanish portion of the island, their goal was to purge out the french influence in the region as a matter of national security and their targets were frenchmen/colonist sympathizers and the actual creoles living there who had no allegiance to France came to not really care for them either and let the Haitians cook. When official unification occurred under Haitian president Boyer he was welcomed with open arms for the most part and was given the key to major cities in Santo Domingo as a gesture of solidarity. At the time Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador and Panama were all united into a country called Gran Colombia and they intended to let Spanish Santo Domingo enter their union but they flat out refused, preferring to remained aligned with Haiti which was the only other country at the time that had abolished slavery, since most of them were either free blacks/black descendants at risk of losing their rights again if a foreign country were to intervene or ex slaves freed under Haitian occupation who were grateful of their newfound freedom.Eh
DR always resisted Haitian occupation
It was true at one point, but the thing is that famous picture everyone likes to bring up was taken in the 70's at the height of Haiti's deforestation. Since then, not only has Haiti began to regain it's trees to a stable level by 2017 but Dominican Deforestation has escalated to the point where it's becoming a growing concern there as well, so the differences aren't as stark. But it's important to note that historically Haiti was always deforested because under the french most of the forests were cleared out to open land space up for sugar plantations (of which Haiti was the largest producer in the world at the time) along with timber (Haiti was also France's largest source of Mahogony) and and then again by the Catholic Church who started a de-superstition campaign in Haiti (in Haitian Vodou, a lot of trees are considered sacred and are of large ritualistic significance). Some of Haiti's first few laws actually deal with the preservation of trees and cutting trees down was deemed illegal after independence so this was a problem they've been looking to fix for yeaaaarsI read a article I think on this site, that said Haiti's deforestation claim is a lie.
