Why Fredo Betrayed Michael In The Godfather Part II

Fredo got played.

I still dont understand what happened at conpound


So who killed the assassins. Who pulled the curtains if not him? How wouodnt he know if he pulled the curtains. How didnt he know period. He had to have known. Its one of the only parts of the movie i dont get. Cuz they filmed his scene talking to ola yelling about it how he didn't know. Its like its intentionally confusing on purpose.

Of course someone coulda snuck in from the party but someone killed the guards ON the compound.

But people downplay fredo now. If gf3 was sposed to go as planned, michael was sposed to go against tom hagen and connie.

Michael is just as much a part of fredos downfall as fredo himself. As is connie and tom. He pushed them all aside and kept them out the loop; same mistake vito made early. He wasnt taking chances but went too far. That pushed carlo into barzinis arms. They didnt learn anything from that. Its a blindspot and part of the sicillian bs they on how “only a sicillian can be this ruthless. Go home irish tom ya not war time consiglieri”. So ruthless he alienated his family. They want people beholden to them like clemenza , frabkie 5 angels, luca and rocco who will throw their lives away.

Mike aint vito either and people miss vito DID go soft. His real consig died before wedding. Thats why they moved on him. Its a cant win position. Mike did too in the end. And he lost everything even when he gained the one thing he always wanted. For naught.

People downplay this way too much.

Mike wasnt shyt. His Kids hated him. Got his kid killed. His brother killed. Turned connie into a monster. Ignored tom and used him as a pawn to move at his discretion. “Dont go against the family”. Ok mike.

This is all foreshadowed early on way he leaves kay completely. Married a new girl. She dies. Forgets her. Comes back to kay years after the fact. Mike was ruthless like his pops but it was all fear, no love.

Part 2 has some weird plot holes which is why part 1 is still superior.

Vito would've never forgiven Mike for killing Fredo if he was alive... But Mike had to make that call. Fredo was a liability.

You know, every once in awhile, I feel sorry for Fredo. Especially in the first film. He’s clearly overlooked by everyone in the family, including his brothers and father. I’ll never forget this quote:

TOM: “If your father dies, you make the deal, Sonny.”
SONNY: “You know that’s easy for you to say, Tom. He’s not your father.”
TOM: “I’m as much of a son to him as you and Mike.”

Ouch! No mention of Fredo.

But it doesn’t help him that he dropped a gun when his father was getting lit up like a Christmas tree and he later defended Moe Greene against his own family.

And then I remember this quote from Part 2:

MIKE: “Fredo has a good heart. But he is weak and stupid.”

And then I go back and wonder if being sick so much as an infant stunted him in some way or if he was just a fukk up in life.

I guess I sort of see Fredo as a tragic character in these films.

I'm planning on finally reading the fukking book after putting it off for so many years despite loving the movie, but I think one of the aspects of the book is that Fredo is very similar to Sonny(maybe a bit simpler) before the attack on Vito, and then his insecurities get the best of him.

Fredo did get Vito's love for family out of the four though. There's a reason he was sent to do menial tasks, he was comfortable to be around and fun. It's telling both him and Vito die after playing with Michael's son.

I'm staying at a cabin in Catskills over Christmas, so I already bought the books a couple of weeks ago.
shyt is going to be amazing. Told the people I'm going with to fukk off and go skiing, because I'm not doing shyt but reading and then watching the movies again for the entire time I'm there.
