You have to be on 3.55 original or custom firmware, if you are on higher firmware i.e. original 4.40 then you need to buy hardware downgrader like E3 flasher or Progskeet to get back to 3.55. Once you are there its very simple to upgrade to custom jailbroken 4.40 and
