Why do we have trials for people like James Holmes, Jared Loughner and the like?

Why are we afraid of this slippery slope?
Is the death penalty not still only given out for murder and treason?

I would also think there would be a huge difference between hearsay from one person and doing something in a public place with at dozens of witnesses and cameras everywhere. We have to account for technology, right?


And finally, it seems to me that consensus so far is that trials are about more than just finding and establishing guilt?

Because I don't trust the judgment of white people.

I never understood why we must go through a full trial when there's obvious evidence of the crime, along with wasting millions of tax payers dollars during the process? The defendants only case is insanity, and unless your state has a death penalty, the obvious sentence is life in prison. What, we're going to go to trial for a year and spend millions of dollars on trial to give the defendant 2+ life sentences??! fukk outta here..

Forget the trial we know Holmes and Loughner arent EVER leaving prison.I think lawyers secretly use these trials to make a name for themselves.The jury for cases like Holmes,Loughner and even Sandusky know the suspects are guilty.

To be honest, I don't want him killed.

He should be studied. There is no pattern for destruction, no evident twist in his life that explains his outburst. His characteristics and life achievements shows no signs of mental illness or aggressive behavior, I don't know, I think we can learn a lot from talking to the dude. What made this neuroscience honor student feel the need to shoot up a cinema?

How can a neuroscience major, logically snap. Holmes must have really being testing his limits of perception or something. Breh must have thought he was in a matrix or somesh*t.Instantaneously snapping is one thing, but this was cold-blooded calculated murder. You can't even plead insanity because justifying the wiring of his home with explosives isn't something you can just do overnight
