Rihanna has popularity for other reasons than her music. And besides that you said record sales isn't a good measurement, record sales ≠ first week record sales. Rihanna's last album has sold 980k in the states (still counting) and 3-4 million worldwide. She has sold over 25 million with 6 albums world wide (don't forget that she's not even an American artist). She sold out 9 shows in a row in the same arena in London. But because of this iTunes thing, a lot of fans only buy the songs they like that's why Rihanna has sold 60 million singles or whatever the fukk.

I know Rihanna is popular for other reasons than her record sales, which I why I said record sales aren't always a good measure of popularity...

First week record sales are record sales... a lot of people like to bring that up when talking about how popular one artist is compared to the next. "Jeezy is more popular than Ross because he sold more first week" etc etc. I guess I should have said that first week record sales don't mean shyt.

First week sales is hard to explain imo, I see it as buzz combined with diehard fans. Rihannas fans might say imma wait and see if the singles are good enough, the reviews are good enough etc (cause in pop most times singles the best songs). While Ross's fans might just say, his last album was crack I'm gonna cop this album as well.

as far as popularity, maybe not popularity as a celebrity but quite a good measure of popularity as a musician. Rihanna is a Kim Kardashian who knows how to sing and dance. Most people on her twitter and facebook would probably care about her if she stopped singing 3 years ago. While Rick Ross is pretty much done if he stops delivering fire.

For instance, when people are saying Ross knocked Jeezy out his spot and people not fukking with him like that no more but sells more then Ross it says a lot. When people actually get off their ass and go into a store to buy a hard copy of your album, it shows how many true fans you have.

But ALL these Def Jam albums are doing damn near the exact same numbers. Popularity can't be judged on album sales anymore. If Jeezy went sold a milli the first week like Lil Wayne then you might have a point.

We only started caring like that after 50 started talking about people flopping. Back in the late 90's early 2000 era nikkas wasn't scared to drop different albums on the same day. Rappers knew they were gonna sell in the long run it was never about first week numbers. I been stopped looking at numbers because it's some bullshyt. Why do they always round the number off to the hundreth. And why does most rap artists always push between 100,000 to 200,000 unless u one of the big five. (Jigga EM Drake Wayne Kanye). It's contrived and so obvious that record labels are scanning albums over and over again.

Well at least record sales matter more than what type of jeans fit rappers rock which's something hiphop purists care about these days

The nikkas usually arguing about "album sales" are usually the nikkas that don't buy the albums...its like a online bootlegger telling a movie critic that Avengers was better then Citizen Kane cuz it sold more :what:
