Why do Middle Class couples place themselves in debt over $30,000+ weddings?

I've never understood why middle class people place themselves in thousands of dollars in debt for a wedding. I know couple in the 23-27 age range who already have 20K+ in student loans who are spending 30K on a wedding (this doesnt include the honeymoon). Why spend all that money on 1 day when you can use that money to buy a new house or pay off your debt?

The man is supposed to be the leader. He should be able to say if you want to marry me then we arent having a big wedding. Lets go to the courthouse and get married in front of your loving family and friends. If she loves him she would do that wouldnt she?

I would never let my woman make big financial decisions. Almost every woman I know is in extreme credit card debt from buying too much shyt and never paying it off.

Been there, done that. Didn't go into debt over it, was able to pay as it went planning.... but hindsight is 20/20. Even though I'm div'd now, as soon as it was over, I thought.... - that money could have been spent on a DP for a house....

Then again, I know people that did this and wouldn't have it any other way.

Edit- to clarify- my guy at the time had just as much input on the budget as I did.

exactly what me & wifey did fukk paying for rings and weddings. We got ring tattoo's and called it a day.
