Most of the OG smash melee players (ken, azen, etc.) would be getting shytted on by the people with the "newer" tech like armada and leffen. Only a few players like Mew2King has been relevant throughout the game's entire lifespan. Melee has evolved an insane amount throughout it's life. Also, the game did slow down but had a resurgance.
If a capcom or another company's game starts to slow down and there is a new game then it's over even if people like the older game more, because the eSports dollars and spotlight will be on the newer game no matter what. There isn't going to be a capcom pro tour for SF4 or 3 no matter how many people like those games.
Smash bros, being entirely community run, doesn't have this issue.

I know this post is a year old but new smash melee tech in 2017 is crazy. I thought that game had been figured all the way out.
