I disagree with the posters saying church doesn't have nothing to offer young black people. It depends on the church. I actually just became a member of a church I started going to when I moved to Charlotte(back in Feb) and at this church, it's nothing but young people--mostly people in their early twenties through thirties. There are older people too, but this is by far a very young church. What the church offers is a family that watches out for you, helps you to make more principled decisions(not making decisions based on what the world is doing), and the church I go to teaches you to focus on "we" not "you"--so you learn to be selfless to not be so consumed with yourself, but with helping others. We do local services for the community(volunteering), we disciple(go out to places within Charlotte to speak to people about Jesus), and we connect with each other--like a family. We get advice on problems we're having, and get on point messages to and great worship music. My church is also 90% black.
I can't speak to why other young people aren't going, but with the way this world is(in 2018), I'd say that more young people need God, this is just my opinion. I wasn't raised in the church, and up until two years ago I was not a believer. I was like f*** church and thought it all was stupid--I was not about to get up early on Sunday. But it was turning to God, and going to Church that helped me find peace, make better decisions, stop being so focused on my own problems, and to just be a better person to others that I meet on the daily basis. It's also helped me to endure trials, and to not need to be validated by others opinions, it's helped raise my self worth(the way I see myself). That's not to say that going to church will do this for everyone--I do think it depends on the Church you go to. There were a few churches I went to in Philly, that I never felt at home, or comfortable with the people, the sermons, or the overall culture. A lot of the young people at my church, have provided plenty of testimonies about how once they started going and committing to it, they stopped with the clubbing and shyt, and all the things that were keeping them from going in the first place, and just making better decisions in general. And these are black men I'm talking about(young ones too) so I think, that the church can offer what you invest in it, once you find the right one.
