What factors do you think contribute to how motivated a person is?

Genetics? Environment? Past experiences? Parenting?

I would say a combination of all of those play a factor.
I can see how parenting does. Reward systems and such. But one could argue that the kid could lose motivation once on their own due to the world not giving them that reward system.

it could be indirect also, tho. Observing/learning from a highly motivated parent can result in a highly motivated kid...just like observing/learning from a lazy piece of shyt can result in the opposite.

its always a mix

idk if genetics even matter

EDIT: i think its just experiences, which encompasses learning from parents

my parents taught me that the world is a rough place and if i dont put in work im gonna b strugglin to pay bills all the time (despite the fact that my parents made roughly 180k a year, if you add both their salaries)

So im motivated by the fact that i have to get shyt done to ensure a peaceful life. Of course im also motivated by interests and appreciation for things like music, pursuit of knowledge, etc.

environment, some type of conflict or struggle as a kid, and/or knowing about rewards.

also instinct...

for most men it's p*ssy... or getting things that will allow u to get more p*ssy.

For a few men it's greed.

for a small fraction it's wanting to help people.

For women... it's usually something random.

your genetics probably set the capacity for how much you can be motivated, and for what kinds of things that will be more motivational than others (food, sex, status, safety, etc.). then your role models and the society's rules give you a set of goals that you are allowed to have without punishment, if you are naturally motivated to seek social status, or if your society severely punishes certain actions, you will tend to channel your actions and gear your motivation toward those acceptable things. by the time you reach adulthood, you should be seeing some results (good or bad) of your efforts, and will possess enough freedom and common sense to adjust accordingly.

I was just talking about this on another forum. This describes me to a t.

I'd say I'm motivated, with caution. My motivation is to understand, not to do. I'll put enormous effort into figuring something out, but once I've done that I don't give a damn about actually doing it.

It just seems like I'm not motivated because all the heavy lifting is in my head.

I don't think genetics play a role at all, much more upbringing and environment...and also challenges: my own example is that I was always quite good at school, so I was quickly bored by it...in the end I ended up much less motivated in general because I was never really pushed at that level

edit: also, seeing other people (family, friends, neighbors) "make it" in some way...whether professionally or by pursuing a personal goal...again, not seeing that in my environment kind of gave me a "shyt won't work anyway" mentality

people can bring up 5 kids in the same environment and end up with 5 radically different results, so their unique personality traits have to have at least some basis in their nature.
