Why are so many countries expanding their presence in the red sea?

@Misreeya how do you feel about the recent deal between Sudan and Turkey? What's the general mood in Sudan and the Arab speaking world? I hear that the Arabs in the Gulf and elsewhere aren't too happy about it and are cursing Sudan :mjlol:

From what I see its mainly the UAE thats unhappy about it, because they have an especially antagonistic relationship with Turkey. Egypt as well, for the same reasons. Egypt and Sudan though historically and culturally linked, have had tensions over the past year over territorial disputes too.

Saudi's relationship with Turkey is actually not as polarized, and they seem to be mum to the deal. Bashir's former advisor is actually one of MBS's advisors right now too. I dont think Arabs, as far as the general public goes, are angry though. Erdogan is still pretty popular in a good part of the Arab world.

Saudi and the UAE have hoped Sudan would move towards their position on Qatar, but Bashir has tried to tread a neutral line because Qatar is a major investor in Sudan as well. He's balanced this with the military support hes contributed to the Saudi coalition's Yemen campaign.

Didn't watch the video yet but from what I always known the red sea is a very good geopolitical strategic territory.

Yeah it's been like that since the beginning of time, but for the last 3-5 years all the countries have been dramatically increasing their presence there. shyt is like a new gold rush. :francis:

Turkey has a military base in Mogadishu and now they have to deal with Sudan. The UAE has a base in Berbera (Somaliland) where it is also expanding the port as well as the port in Bosaso (Puntland). The UAE also has a presence in Yemen. Qatar is in Eritrean. In Djibouti you have a gazillion military bases as usual, China is a recent addition. China has projects all over Ethiopia.

Why all this interest now? :ohhh:

Why does the UAE have such an antagonistic relationship with Turkey? Is it because of Erdogan's support for Morsi and the Ikhwan in Egypt?

What is Bashir's position on the dam project in Ethiopia? It's mostly Sisi who has been making a fuss about it. I hear that the UAE is supporting the Ethiopian position, which is weird considering their close alliance with the Egyptian regime.

Yeah the UAE-Turkey beef is over the MB. They were actually investing significant amounts in Turkey prior to Morsi's overthrow but withdrew their Ambassador after Erdogan didnt budge on his opposition to the coup. Relations between them and Egypt have been tense since. Saudi also was unhappy at first, but since has become more flexible on the issue. They've had a full rapprochement since and they even deported a Gulenist guy in Saudi to Turkey last year :heh:

Sudan used to oppose the dam with Egypt, but has come around to it in recent years. It will impact both countries, but at the end of the day a military option is implausible so they may as well cooperate since Ethiopia has gone through with it regardless.

As far as the UAE supporting the dam IDK. Saudi, Qatar, and UAE have all tried to forge closer ties with Ethiopia in recent years. A lot of news that has to do with these countries has to be taken with a grain of salt. They're all opaque regimes which adds to tons of rumour and speculation in the media sphere, especially when theyre at odds.

Why do you think all these countries are all of a sudden interested in the Horn of Africa region? Is it simply to control trade routes? :patrice:

A great place to project military power as well. For the Gulf countries, who see themselves as burgeoning military powers, and with their immediate interest in Yemen its also convenient for geographic reasons.

It's a risky position to be in. Already the Houthi rebels are threatening Somaliland because of the the UAE military base in Berbera :snoop:
That video was 100 percent fake :russ: Im pretty sure it was taped in Hargeisa itself, someone paid Yemeni refugees to read that and printed out SL flags. The new President said he would review the deal, so they may be trying to set the justification for the cancellation.

The Houthis are backward, but not that backward. The control Sabaa (Yemens state news agency) Salehs old satellite channel and Al Masirah their own channel. Every time they threaten Saudi or the UAE they broadcast it all over their channels.... nothing like that weird video with some random Yemenis with covered faces (they have no reason to conceal their identity)
