From '88 on, we had hits in the Bay...
Musically, I don't think any area was really fu*king with us (production-wise), with Rap-A-Lot and Ruthless/Dre being the exceptions. We had production monsters in the bay at that time...
I've got a gang of stuff that I'll drop in this thread...but it'll have to wait until later.
But some notes:
* Mac Mall dropped (arguably) the best album ever by a 16 year old with Illegal Business.
* Rappin Ron honestly may have become the GOAT (in this genre) if he hadn't died.
* Ant Didley wasn't very far behind Rappin Ron (skill-wise)
* Ant Mother-Fuc*ing Banks. Enough said....lol!
* We lost A LOT of really talented artists behind street sh*t...possibly more than any other region or area...
im a huge fan of the bay ... i always said the bay mobb music was on par if not better than g funk and im from southern killa kali but that mobb was on another level
that being said... cant co sign ant banks... its been proven that guy was a semi fraud and pretty much had the skills of dr. dre...a glorifed mixer....
shorty b on the other hand... the most known unknown*******************************************************************
Dubcnn: Ok, yeah thatd be cool right there! Ill get that from you at the end of the interview, if thats cool...but, um in an interview with Too $hort about a year ago, he mentioned that the time frame from Shorty The Pimp up to Gettin It was the most fun he ever had making songs. How do you feel about that era? How was it being in the studio with those guys?
Yeah, I guess it was cuz let me tell you somethin thats funny. Me & $hort fell out in like 95, right? He kept offering everybody all these wack-ass exclusive contracts, and I wouldnt sign it, and I wouldnt sign it to this day. I told him I do however many songs he wanna do, but I aint signin with you exclusive cuz you gonna give me $70/80,000 and thats gonna be it for me. And I cant work with nobody, so when that $80,000 gone, Im through! It aint goin down like that, so I never signed the contract. Everybody signed that muthafukka, but I wouldnt sign it. So its like the minute I left, $hort aint been platinum since. It aint nothin but the truth, you know what Im sayin? And you can print that!
When Shorty B left, it all went down hill. Its seems like I took a million sales with me, just by lookin at the record sales after I left. $hort didnt even go gold after I left like 4 or 5 albums. And I came back and did Chase the Cat, and I dont know how many that did. It may of did 300,000/400,000. But Jive wasnt really fukkin with $hort, after a while they wouldnt even answer his phone calls. We had did Album Number 10, and he thought that was gonna be the biddin war, but they wasnt trippin on $hort. And then the funny part, this is the God-to-honest truth, Jive gave Ant Banks a record deal thinkin he was me!
Dubcnn: Are you serious??
Hell yeah! They gave Ant Banks a record deal, but Ant banks wasnt makin the music. Ant Banks was just mixin the music. I dont know how they thought that shyt, cuz it was fukked up. A lotta shyt that was sold, soley mine, $hort kinda played me out of it, and put Produced by The Dangerous Crew. That wasnt no goddamn Dangerous Crew, that was produced by Shorty B! Period!
Dubcnn: So in the credits, if it says Produced by The Dangerous Crew, its really Shorty B?
Yeah thats me, cuz them muthafukkaz didnt play nothin!! Goddamn! The reason why Ant Banks aint poppin is cuz Ant Banks, I think he got confused himself and started to think that he was really gonna be, he wanted to be Dr. Dre, but how you gonna be Dr. Dre and its me! But see, Jive didnt know that and thats why they dropped him after they found out that Banks couldnt deliver. Thats it, they dropped him. I was like, you stupid muthafukkas, it wasnt him from the beginning! Cuz Banks dont play nothin.
Dubcnn: But what about his TWDY albums
?
I mean, you know he producin doin alright. And then Banks got a song called 4 Tha Hustlaz, with 2Pac on it, thats me, thats my shyt - I did that song! Thats all Shorty B. So there was some old faulty shyt goin on, but I knew it couldnt really hold me back cuz I knew it was comin from my fingers. I knew where it was comin from. Even if my homies had confused themselves, I knew where it was comin from, and everybody else knew. Cuz its my sound to this day. Its like I did a song on T.I.s last album, the last song on Urban Legend. Me & Daz. I did it, Daz rapped on it. But if you listen to that song thats like I just gave T.I. that old Dangerous Crew sound. If you listen to that, its called My Life. I told him I was gonna give him that old Dangerous Crew sound, and it worked. And the record was so big, that T.I. didnt know what to do with it. He just put it on his album. It was the last song on the album and he just put it on there, it was so big, man. I dunno theres just so many cats out here man that are so faulty and confusin Im from the old school where if it aint about loyalty, it aint about nothin. If you aint gonna do what you say, and say what you do, then it aint sense even fukkin with you.
Dubcnn: Yeah, I got some homies I be fukkin with, tryin to do some things...and they be sayin they gonna do this and do that, but then you dont hear from for like days and shyt...
Right! Yeah, you know its like the industry know me, but I aint never been an industry cat. I say what I do, I do what I say. Period!
Dubcnn: And get paid!
Yeah! Simple as that! I aint bullshyttin or got time to be bullshyttin. And I dont bite my tongue. I say exactly whats on my mind. I dunno, but its like the only thing I been tryin to tell Ant Banks, see Ant Banks is gonna finally realize that it aint him it was me and Im out here still cuttin records. Im still platinum as a muthafukka, I dont know when the last time Ant Banks went Platinum you know, thats my homie, I love Banks, but its like they waited too long to realize did what. And by not realizin it, they fukked it all off. And so I had to leave cuz muthafukkas had their hands in my pockets , and they acted like they didnt really realize what it was.
Dubcnn: Do you think we will see some sort of a Dangerous crew reunion happen where you, $hort, Banks, PeeWee and some of the other rappers from the Old Crew get back together, is that a possibility?
Oh yeah, yeah, the only thing is it would have to be some straight up money upfront and it has to be stipulated whats asked of me. And I need my money right now! Every muthafukkin dime, cuz we cant get down all the way. $hort my homie, but he like, kinda soft to me. $hort know he gotta play real ball with me because $hort done seen me do some shyt that he dont really want. He dont want no part of. And I dont really want it to have no part of him, when you get on that side of me, you know what Im sayin? What was that group he had out here, with the guys from all the different place?
Dubcnn:: Oh, Badwayz? With Studd, Joe Riz , Murda One??
Yeah! You know, I ended up pistol-whippin Joe Riz at Lake Hav?? In front of $hort into a bloody pulp. And I think that kinda registered with $hort like Ok, Shorty B is not playin!
Dubcnn: Yeah, Shorty Bs for real *laughs*
Shorty B is not playin, man. And Im not fukkin with him on no bullshyt no more. So when $hort come to me, it gotta be straight upfront. Aint no ass kissin cuz I done made a 100 records that went platinum since I aint fukked with you, been on everybodys records. So, $hort respect and I dont think, I wonder about that Dangerous Crew shyt cuz aint nobody really gonna put no money behind it, I dont think. You know because if its up to $hort, since I guess he owns the name, the business aint gonna give us nothin but problems. Cuz one thing I notice about $hort, and I love $hort, but he dont know how to take money and make money. $hort just know how to make money and spend money. He dont know how to take the money he made and make it make money. Cuz to me, $hort done fukked off 2 record labels: Dangerous Music and Too $hort Records. And what will fukk me up with $hort, is that we would get a nice video budget, and $hort would spend all the money and then shoot a wack-ass video!
So thats what hurt $hort a lot cuz he was so greedy, that he would spend all the money and then give the people bullshyt. Shootin them wack-ass videos and I was like man, we gotta stop this. After that I was like I dont need them, they need me, so Ima take my shyt and go on, and I been doin my thing ever since, man.
