Is Diego Maradona really not that well known in the US?

He’s obviously so famous in the rest of the world, only Mike Tyson could come close.
That’s the thing about these type of debates on The Coli and other American based sites. Soccer players are so insanely popular everywhere BUT America, but also American ignorance and arrogance combined has us believing that whatever is going on here is the default for the rest of the planet.

Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven
For what it's worth, as a kid who was living in CAR at the time and had no interest whatsoever in sports, I knew who Tyson was before I knew of the other guys. MJ took over in the early 90s and it was a wrap post Dream Team.
Just for reference... This was 1984... Jordan was already being plastered everywhere. It wasn't no "until the 90s" shyt.

And Mike Tyson didn't even win a title until 1986

The apparel brand launched the Air Jordan sneaker in 1984 and placed a sales goal of $3 million over the first three years. Jordan shattered that goal and the shoe went on to make $126 million in the first year alone.

Yeah may very well be...in the US. I specifically talked about MY experience living in the Central African Republic at the time. Tyson was known over there, even by a kid like myself who wasn't even into sports.

Well it depends on what time period, since the 80s is a ten year period.

Jordan’s marketing appeal was a source of contention among Magic and other players. Magic was upset that he didn’t get marketed the same way, as he was not only an all-time great player, but a very charismatic guy too. But David Falk was smart and saw that Jordan should be marketed differently than other NBA players. He told Nike to market him like they would a tennis player, more as an individual. Those other NBA stars would be rapping together on Converse commercials.

I can’t say whether or not that made Jordan bigger, and when exactly he surpassed Magic in popularity. Tyson was huge too in the late 80s. Boxing, especially HW, had more mainstream appeal then. Even kids who didn’t follow boxing knew about Tyson because of the video game.

There really is no wrong answer but I gotta go with Iron Mike...when I think about growing up in the 80s every fight was must watch TV....they were damn near holidays....Magic is a close second...Jordan I’d save for the 90s
