the fact that you have to compensate for shytty directing and writing means it's not going to make money. I don't think it's a wise business plan to think in advance, "yeah, since we hired a shytty director and two shytty writers, I guess we should find some really big star to compensate". It's definitely not going to work on overseas markets. Just look at the past two overseas hits, Pacific Rim and Avatar. You need a good director, everything starts and ends there.

while i liked both these movies.. these types of movies are hits overseas because of their impressive special effects more than anything else.

it's the reason domestic flops like john carter, oblivion and after earth can do 200mil overseas.

I'm not trying to stereotype the asian markets tastes, but I always thought it had to do with their love of scifi/big robots.

to be fair, john carter and oblivion weren't bad movies. I wasn't very aware of their overseas success though.

First time director, original movie (not a sequel or franchise), the writers of fast and furious and drive teaming up with Keanu Reeves? :aicmon:

I had no idea it had such a large budget, thought it was 50mil tops. Universal is going to take a huge L on this

keanu still has some of that matrix audience left

it's probably a combination of both.

hollywood does sci-fi in a way that nobody else can match or even come close to at the moment.

i think that's why it's easier for these studios to take huge risks on these types of movies. even if it does flop.. it's almost guaranteed that you make back the budget overseas.

even movies like jack the giant slayer and percy jackson :scusthov: do 100mil overseas easy.

all that being said.. ronin 47 doesn't really look like kind of movie that should have cost 225mil.

I have a feeling they put all their eggs in the "Pacific Rim" basket thinking all the asians would hurry out to see this movie  these studio execs gotta be dumb

Pacific Rim actually did do well in Asia, just not Japan. China is the 2nd biggest market for our movies, I believe, and it did well there. But Pacific Rim actually had things going for it. This movie has looked like trash since the get go. And it is actually a remake- just a loose one.

:gladbron: Bruh, according to The-Wrap (http://www.thewrap.com/movies/artic...n-director-budget-swells-225m-exclusive-57111) the movie has a $225 Million dollar budget.

:russ: EVERYBODY who greenlit/co-sgined this movie need to be fired. Keanu Reeves been WASHED-UP

Interesting. Any theories as to why it didn't work in Japan? Of all places you'd think it would've made insane money there.

And yeah, I totally agree about your sentiments about Pacific Rim, which was a point I brought up to Mowgli, it had a great director in Guillermo Del Toro. They got a fukking first time director, and the writers of Fast and furious and Drive to do this movie. I mean, right there, what the hell are they thinking? Could they not get ANYONE else?

thats wild.

Yeah, the budget was just absurd. The CGI animals from the trailer looked like After Earth/I Am legend status :scusthov:

The other thing is that 47 Ronin is a well-known folk story in Japan. It's considered a national legend. I'm not sure they'll be excited to see a foreign remake of one of their national stories starring a white dude, with subpar effects and massive plot changes.

It's a good question about Pacific Rim. I'm not sure myself, but do I think the market there is oversaturated with that kind of stuff. They have all these ridiculous live action versions of mecha anime there already.
