I'm a producer and I've engineered a little, and observed A LOT of engineering so I feel like I have an informed opinion. Engineering has advanced so much in that in 2020 most engineers are very close to the same level, what separates them usually is equipment, but with good equipment your local producer could probably engineer as good as MixedByAli.

They are all insanely good at the industry level and I don't think one stands out way above the others. I'm sure back in 1998 this would be a completely different ballgame, but in 2020 that's where we're at.

Exactly. I'm an audiophile that's a huge production nerd. I can name production credits for most albums and even I don't think I know enough to answer this question.

I only know a few engineers that get a lot of praise like Young Guru, Eddie Sancho, Ali, Mike Dean, etc.

Here’s a question.

What EXACTLY makes an Engineer so great? Like what separates the truly great ones from the average?

For me I mostly always say Dre for Hip Hop because his albums always sound so crisp and clean to me. People say Guru, but besides The Blueprint and The Black Album (both sound pristine to me) I couldn’t name a Jay-Z album or even a roc-A-Fella album other than early Kanye that sounds any more “special” than other Hip Hop albums.

I also happen to think It Was Written sounds goddamn PERFECT with the mixing, mastering, and sequencing yet i’ve never heard Trackmasters get any special technical credit for any of their bodies of work.
