I was an English Literature major, so I couldn't avoid it...our reading lists were insane sometimes....it was especially hard to get through all the novels you didn't even like. I like reading at my own pace now though...I don't feel like I'm rushing through.
English Major?
How many books you read a month now?
Yeah I'd say I'm around 3-4 books in a month. Don't own a TV, I usually read like half-an-hour before going to bed, in the metro, lunch-breaks, more on the weekends. If you want to, there's always time to read, depends what your entertainment priorities are.
Half an hour goes by face for me. I do that sometimes before bed. But like, after reading for 2 hours I'll only have covered like a chapter...that makes me mad. There's really no reason to speed read, esp because I'm doing a lot of analyzing while I'm reading, but I'd love to be able to finish 3-4 books a month; mainly because there are so many things I want to learn about and figure out. I have a goal for myself in terms of knowledge and I'm definitely not where I want to be right now.
And you're right about priorities. The internet and videogames take up a lot of my entertainment time. I'm an aspiring writer, so I like to write to, but I don't do that consistently. Now that I'm back in school, I have to do a lot of school and shyt so I don't have the time. I can make time, though.
Why don't you own a TV? I had an older friend who told me that in college he didn't own a TV either and got a lot of reading done. He suggested that I put away my TV as well. I don't watch TV really; I only use it for videogames and sports. Maybe I should think about putting it away though, in order to get more reading and writing done. Doesn't feel good that my ultimate goal of being a published fiction novelist is so far away from me...I have to work harder.
Yeah if you're in the right situation. I don't have any music player so if I take the bus I'm murdering my books since there ain't shyt else to do. Plane flights are another good way, gotta have minimal distractions so you can sink into the book.
You're right--minimal distractions is key.
