At first glance I wanna say Marley. But then I thought about that Native Tongues shyt. Without them we don’t get Busta Rhymes and the Flipmode Squad. Roc Marciano has been one of the top underground acts for years. Then you got Q Tip who introduced us to Dilla and without them don’t get the whole Soulquarians collective. Dilla was responsible for the some of the better songs to come from that. Plus Q Tip took Havoc under his wings

Queen Latifah is an icon and was down with Native Tongues and discovered Naughty By Nature

Without BDP we don’t get the classic Mad Izm and D Nice never woulda been in the position he is today

Yea gotta go with Red Alert by a mile :wow:

Without PR you don't get Dilla's whole style/outlook/foundation on beats

That said I would go with Red Alert...

Lighty alone is massive

Above the fray.
ATCQ and others used to shout out Baby Chris. Didn't know until later that he was the guy in Native Tongue photos who was always laughing. Seemed like a happy-go-lucky guy.

Wasn't until he passed, and they did stories about him did I learn that he was once the King of the Goons, and that Violator meant exactly what it means.

Thanks.
Your post made me go back and reference an old JB video that used to run on Video Music Box. Red name checked all the crews/artists that were down with him.

I adjusted the list to include Latifah and the 45 King directly. I thought that La was loosely associated, but she's in Red's family tree directly. Will change the graphic later.

I have Red and Ralph in my Hip Hop Mount Rushmore. Funny thing is, I have Mr Magic on there, but not Marley Marl.

* I have Flex under Chuck Chillout's family tree. He used to speak all the time on the radio about being a flunky/crate carrier for Chuck. His famous line was "I was bacon"

Well it was Mr. Magics show, Marley was just learning the game from him so having on your Mt. Rushmore makes sense. He's the reason that the juice crew is named the juice crew.

Flex is under Chuck Chillout but Red Alert was the guy who let him hold down his show when he went on tour and when they were starting hot97 they offered Red Alert the job and he told them give it to Flex. Chuck put Flex on but Red took him from crate carrier to legend and he wasn't even in his crew.

Made a thread, including a preview of this book that just came out

*I started a new tag "record pool", for posts like this one and the link. About hip hop history. I can't tag or know who would take interest in every story, so do a regular search of the tag to check out the latest posts.
Would like to debate/discuss topics with dudes who grew up with the music.
==========================

*Also, I still haven't decided between Marley and Red.

Without Red Alert, there is no Tribe or Native Tongues. So I'm going with Uncle Red. So many legends came through that collective, like Dilla, Mos Def, Beatnuts, Black Sheep, Prince Paul, Naughty by Nature, etc. Red's also one of the most humble dudes you'd ever meet, and he's from around the way, so I may be a little biased with this one, lol.

Marley is a Top 5 producer of all-time though. That's not up for debate either.

I saw Red Alert posted up against a wall in Penn Station. Dapped him up, payed my fare, went through the turnstile and caught my train downtown.

I’ll go with Red. yeeeeaaaaahhhhhhh

Dang I’m a have to go with Red Alert. The Native Tongues were so impactful and different. And Lighty was involved with some great artists

Yeah, man Tribe and De La are epic to me. Their music has the best longevity of freshness to me.

I love ACE and Kool G, Kane, Shante...

Forgot that Red was the one who created/promoted the modern term "props". He was the "prop master"

"Jimmy" comes from under his tree too. Jungle brothers made Jim-Brow-ski and then

" now , Red Alert is down with BDP, teaching you all about Jim Brow Ski

The J, the I, the M, the M, the Y, the J

It's JIMMY"

There's a lot of classic hip hop songs by artist/groups that didn't pan out in the long run that Red Alert was behind. The dismasters small time hustler was produced by Red and is a classic but it was there only hit. There's a lot of artist like that Red had a hand in. Funkmaster Flex came up under Chuck Chillout but Red Alert was the first person to give him a shot to hold down a radio slot and alley-ooped him the job at Hot 97 that they originally wanted Red for. The same spot that Flex been holding down for 30 years.

Red Alert is arguably the most important person in NYC hip hop history next to Ralph McDaniels. Nothing against Marley
Mister Magic.
